Hiking Biking Vegan is BACK! 🌱✨ And this time, we’re traveling around the world to my 2nd home: TAIWAN 🇹🇼

Just over a year ago, I led HBV’s very first vegan tour. I returned from Ireland to Asheville full of energy and motivation, bursting with ideas for the future of Hiking Biking Vegan.

Then Helene came.

Suddenly, all of my dreams were put on hold as I picked up the pieces of my life. I was fortunate—I only lost my income, not my home or my loved ones. But I struggled to navigate life after a natural disaster. All of my focus shifted to the day-to-day essentials of rebuilding my life.

The Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the Appalachian mountains of western NC and VA, connecting Shenandoah NP to Great Smoky Mountains NP. When Helene hit, the Parkway was severely damaged. For the last 11 months, hikers and cyclists in Asheville have learned to live without their favorite routes and trails.

Yesterday, our long wait finally ended. The section of Parkway from Cherokee to Asheville finally reopened, and I celebrated by riding up through dense, wet clouds to Frying Pan Fire Tower. I climbed 6,100+ feet of elevation over 64 miles, got soaked to the bone and couldn’t stop smiling.

I have never felt more stressed, anxious, and exhausted than I did during the months immediately following Helene. But these days, I’m smiling more than ever.

That’s because I have a lot to celebrate. After a long hiatus, I started planning vegan tours again in the spring. By summer I had my first sign ups. And on October 4th—exactly 1 week after the 1 year anniversary of Helene’s destruction—I will be leading a vegan tour to Taiwan, the country where both my vegan journey and my cycling journey began.

I could not be more excited! The chance to show other people the island that changed my life forever is a dream come true.

I can once again imagine a bright future for HBV, thanks to each of you who reached out and signed up for my vegan tours. Expect to hear a lot more from me soon. I want you to have a front row seat as I introduce HBV’s newest, boldest chapter yet 🥳 🌏 ✈️

Y'all, it's time to get out there and explore!

I'm Fielding, Founder and Lead Guide of Hiking Biking Vegan. I wanted to share a little about myself and why I started a vegan travel company.

***What Made You Start Hiking Biking Vegan?***

What I love most about hiking and cycling are the places they take me, places far off the beaten path. When I became vegetarian, and later vegan, I realized those same places that brought me so much joy could no longer keep me fed.

Planning my trips around my diet turned care-free adventures into anxiety-producing challenges. It quickly dawned on me that many vegans faced this same problem.

So I decided to do something about it. Tackling the challenge of vegan travel, finding ways to make it fun again. And it turned out other people wanted to come along.

***What Are These Photos From?***

These are some highlights from my trip to Ecuador in 2022, the trip that made me realize just how difficult plant-based travel can be.

My cousins Mary and MaSu made excellent travel companions as we hiked the rim of a caldera, toured massive waterfalls in the Amazon, and tested our lungs by climbing up to 16,750ft of elevation on an Andean volcano.

Every hike was unforgettable, but every meal was a gamble. Will my intermediate Spanish skills be enough to communicate my dietary needs? Will I find out half way through eating that I just broke veg? I swore on my next big trip, I would come prepared. Little did I know "coming prepared" would turn into "starting my own business."
