Our pilgrimage group visited Chumphu Nye on Nov 3 - day after we arrived in Bhutan. Chumphu Nye is famed - among Bhutanese but seemingly unknown to most tourists - for its “flying Vajravarahi” statue. After a hike that lasted 4.5 hours, we arrived and were shown this flying statue. This life-sized Vajravarahi statue’s left foot is hovering about 2/3” above the altar!! (In representations of Vajravarahi, she only stands on her left-foot while her right foot is raise in a “dancing” position). Unfortunately, it’s a nationwide policy in Bhutan that no photography is allowed inside temples & monastics.

Chumphu Nye is also called “the second Mount Tsari.” It is believed that Chumphu Nye has the same characteristics, qualities and blessings as the Tibetan Mount Tsari which is in the border area between Tibet and India (Arunachal Pradesh). Tsari is one of the three great holy mountains in Tibet and all three are the mandala of Cakrasamvara & Vajravarahi.

The belief in Bhutan is that the popularity of the original Tsari will slowly decline but luckily, there’s Chumphu Nye in Bhutan with its most impressive “flying Vajravarahi! (With the primary Tsari in Tibet now falling under a politically and militarily sensitive area, most aren’t allowed free access to it.)
