Pietro Place

Pietro Place The food, places, people and lessons learned (or not), of Peter Jones, longtime travel professional That day began a lifelong love affair with travel.

Peter Jones travel adventures started on a day trip to Boulogne long before the high speed Eurostar train had ever been imagined. While attending university in England he landed a job as a tour manager for an educational travel company. Peter spent two seasons leading American students throughout Europe—showing them new places, introducing them to new people and and sharing his love for travel tha

t he had discovered just a few years earlier. After graduating from university and working for an educational travel company in the US for a few years, Peter and some friends became determined to establish the premier educational travel company in the industry. In 1978, they founded ACIS, with the belief that travel changes lives. Peter built ACIS around a deep belief and understanding thatquality matters—from itinerary development to hotels to perhaps most importantly, the people hired to guide teachers and students throughout the journey. ACIS has since become the leading educational travel organization in its field. With his new venture, Pietro Place, Peter's goal is to share with you some of his observations on travel and offers some recommendations and advice for travelers about to embark on their journey.

Regent’s Park. London.

London has many gifts, but one of its greatest is its green space. Regent’s Park sits right in the heart of the city, yet somehow feels a world away from the noise and rush beyond its gates.

On a sunny day, the broad avenues, beautifully kept gardens, and open lawns remind you why London remains one of the greenest major cities in the world. Families picnic, friends gather, runners weave through the pathways, and for a moment the city seems to slow down.

I’ve walked through Regent’s Park many times over the years, but it never loses its charm. Perhaps that’s one of London’s secrets — no matter how well you think you know it, there is always another view, another garden, another quiet corner waiting to be discovered.

Tucked away at the Triana end of Seville’s iconic Isabel II Bridge stands the beautiful Capilla de la Virgen del Carmen. With its striking Neo-Mudéjar design, this small chapel feels like a hidden jewel watching over the Guadalquivir River and all who pass by.

Seville is a city that rewards those who slow down and look closely. Sometimes the smallest landmarks tell the biggest stories.

Seville. I hadn’t been to Seville for many years, and I had forgotten what a beautiful city it is. The river gives it all away. I couldn’t help but think of Magellan’s voyage in the early 1500s, which began on this river and ended here several years later — the first circumnavigation of the world.

Crossing the bridge into the old town is almost hypnotic. The tiled buildings, the warmth of the colors, and yes, someone randomly playing a Spanish guitar and clapping in that unmistakable staccato rhythm in a nearby bar.

It’s also very easy to reach from the USA, with major connections through Lisbon or Madrid. I came from London, where flights are cheap and plentiful. It’s probably best to avoid Seville during the peak summer heat, but May, June, and September are perfect times to visit.

Close by are Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, and the magical Córdoba. Spain’s high-speed train, the AVE, easily whisks you from Madrid to Seville, and from Seville to Córdoba in no time at all.

I’m not quite sure why I didn’t discover this place earlier. A must-visit destination. The food is sensational, the wine equally so — as are most Spanish wines. A beautiful place for a three- or four-day visit.

Seville is a city stitched together by bridges — each one connecting centuries of history, culture, and life along the Guadalquivir River. From golden sunsets to quiet reflections on the water, every crossing here feels like stepping into another story.
