AIARE Avalanche Level 1 Course with IMG

Enjoy the pictures from this weekend February 8th and 9th as Mt. Rainier showed what a perfect classroom it can be!

There are few things like experiencing the mountains during the winter. The beauty, the majesty, the solitude, the vastness. IMG was proud to offer AIARE Avalanche level 1 courses this winter on Mt. Rainier. Max Bond IMG’s Veteran guide and certified avalanche educator was happy to present avalanche education curriculum from the American Institute of Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE). 15 participants have been certified in level 1 and are ready to move on to AIARE Avalanche Rescue, and in AIARE Rec 2, or AIARE Pro 1.

Mt. Vinson is an enigmatic mountain in perhaps the most far-off corner of the globe that a mountaineer can dream of. It’s allure has driven many a IMG team to travel far-and-wide to climb its inspiring, remote slopes, hoping to return with incredible stories, jaw-dropping photographs, and a few new summiteers. This year, Vinson delivered as it always has for IMG, ever since we started running expeditions to the “Big Ice” in 1988.

This was a great lesson in patience for our entire team, and the lesson paid off. The second-half of the expedition could not have gone more smoothly; our team seemed to move up the mountain with ease, gifted with excellent weather and a strong group of climbers. With 100% to the summit, we were back in VBC only 6 days after leaving.

Vinson Massif only sees ~100-200 attempts per year, with only ~1,200 summits since it was first climbed in 1966. That means our group is joining an elite club of international climbers. Congratulations, everyone, on the amazing achievement!

Summit success, strong team, strong energy, strong leadership. All come together for a stellar Summit Day!

We’re excited to announce that International Mountain Guide Tyler Nachand and his team summited Aconcagua on February 6th! After waiting out bad weather at Camp 2, they were rewarded with clear skies and calm winds, reaching the summit comfortably in the sun, a rarity on the tallest peak in South America!

Congratulations, team! Your photos make it look easy—but 15 days going uphill, breaking altitude records every step of the way, is no small feat. Well done!

Smooth flight last night!

IMG Leader Max Bond reports that the team had a smooth flight last “night” (its 24 hour daylight!) into the Union Glacier Base Camp (79°46′05″S 83°15′42″W) in the Ellsworth Land area of Antarctica. The team were not able to continue on to the Vinson Base camp, so they erected their tents and spent the night there, enjoying the ALE facilities for dining and hanging out.

Today the team loaded up the Twin Otter ski plane with their duffels and they have been waiting to fly to Vinson BC, but a persistent fog on the Branscomb Glacier has so far made that impossible. Oh well, they made it to The Ice and are in a perfect position for the next move over to the base of Mt Vinson!

Climbers reach Aconcagua Base Camp!

Stu Johnson reports that the team had another nice day of hiking today, climbing 3500 feet to the Plaza Argentina Base Camp at about 13,800 ft. There were some scattered clouds and a mild breeze that kept the temperatures comfortable as they ascended the Relinchos River valley from the Casa de Piedra camp. Now the team is all set up at the comfortable Base Camp and are looking forward to a well-deserved rest day tomorrow. Well done team!

First views of Aconcagua-IMG leader Stu Johnson reports that the team is doing well, with great weather accompanying them through the first two days of their trek to Base Camp. Yesterday, the team followed the Vacas River to the Pampa de Leñas camp at approximately 9,700 feet. Today, they kicked off the New Year with another pleasant hike, reaching the Casa de Piedras camp at about 10,600 feet. From here, they enjoyed their first clear views of Aconcagua, towering above the Relinchos Valley. Tomorrow, the team will ascend this valley to reach the Plaza Argentina Base Camp.
