Clam Lake Elk Fest Downtown Clam Lake. 10am. FREE! Timed to be at the peak of elk bugling season. Many people visit the area to go into the forest and listen to the sounds. The Elk Country ATV club puts on a roasted chicken dinner with all the trimmings. Large area for vendor exhibits with free vendor space with many vendors displaying and selling. A fun nature walk with kids with hidden elk and deer antlers in the woods – kids can find antlers to earn entries in a prize raffle! Brule/St. Croix Boardwalk with Mike Heim (Master Naturalist Advanced Training) – Cable Natural History Museum. 10am-4pm. Cost: $35 member/$45 non-member. This boardwalk winds its way through the wetlands that cover the headwaters of both the Brule and St. Croix Rivers, the ancient drainage channel of Lake Superior during the waning days of the last ice age. Several types of wetlands, including cedar swamp and black ash swamp will be traversed and investigated without getting your feet wet. Apple Pie and Dessert Contest (Bayfield Pavilion). The public is invited to indulge in handcrafted apple treats at the Apple Pie and Dessert Tasting from 5-6:30pm, or until pie is gone. The Manoomin Marsh Project – Vaughn Public Library. Lecture presented by Superior Rivers Watershed Association. 5-6:30pm. Join artist and educator Sara Alsum-Wassenaar for a lecture on the The Manoomin Marsh Project. The Manoomin Marsh Project explores the intersection of ecological restoration, community engagement, and collaborative design, with a growing focus on how protection efforts have evolved into broader strategies for improving water quality. Through consultation with Tribal communities and partnerships with educators, conservation organizations, and local governments, the project develops creative approaches to reestablishing wild rice while inviting people into deeper relationships with the places they inhabit. This lecture traces the project’s evolution, the successes and setbacks encountered along the way, and how design, engineering, and collaborative making can strengthen both ecological restoration and the relationships among people that long-term watershed stewardship depends upon. Discover the Geologic Story of Copper Falls State Park – Copper Falls State Park. 10am-12pm. Event is free but a vehicle admission pass is required to enter the park. Tom Fitz, PhD, will return to Copper Falls State Park for an engaging presentation and guided walk exploring the remarkable geological history of the park. The program will begin at 10am at the Historic Pavilion near the Doughboys’ Trail. Fitz will introduce participants to the ancient forces and geological processes that shaped the park’s dramatic landscape.
