Captain Jeff is a licensed guide with over 15 years experience
fishing Lake Erie. I decided to run charters in 2004 after learning the ropes under Capt Taylor Click, a legend of Lake Erie with over 30 years of experience fishing these waters. My goal is to make sure you have an enjoyable, comfortable and remember-able day aboard the Taylor Made.

Crazy

A snorkeler in Australia hardly believed her eyes when she spotted a sand mullet fish with a wedding band wrapped around its neck.

Norfolk Island local Susan Prior was swimming off the east coast of Australia when she beheld the strange site. Believing the ring might be of value, Prior put it up on the local Classifieds page in the hope she would find the owner, Newsweek reported.

Though flushing “Goldie” down the toilet or setting it free in a creek may seem an expedient option for an unwanted aquarium pet, it just means they’ll end up in streams and lakes, where they can turn into an ecological pest, according to The Ohio State University.

Zebra mussels are an invasive, fingernail-sized mollusk that is native to fresh waters in Eurasia. Their name comes from the dark, zig-zagged stripes on each shell.

Zebra mussels probably arrived in the Great Lakes in the 1980s via ballast water that was discharged by large ships from Europe. They have spread rapidly throughout the Great Lakes region and into the large rivers of the eastern Mississippi drainage. They have also been found in Texas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and California.

Zebra mussels negatively impact ecosystems in many ways. They filter out algae that native species need for food and they attach to--and incapacitate--native mussels. Power plants must also spend millions of dollars removing zebra mussels from clogged water intakes.

To prevent spreading these invasive bivalves wash your boat off with warm, soapy water if possible. Do not transport water from live wells and bait buckets from one water body to another; empty them onto land when possible and dispose of leftover bait in the trash. Most often the bait fish are not native to that water, just like the zebra mussels.

Now that my fishing season has begun I’ll start posting pictures and weekly fishing reports along with any available open dates.
During the last week I have seen the good, the bad & the ugly, one day it’s 75 degrees & sunny, 2 days later it’s 35 degrees & snowing and then it’s 50 degrees but the wind is blowing 35MPH. Gotta love the month of April with the weather being like a roller coaster ride. Today was one of the few times that I can remember that it rained most of the day, usually it’s intermittent rain showers but we still ended up with a nice box of fish. Trolling has been working the best lately because we are in the transition for jigs & minnows to worms & harnesses which makes the drift fishing extremely difficult unless you have an experienced crew.
With that being said when you have to teach 4 out of 5 guys on how to cast a fishing poll odds are you are not going to do very well drifting but you have to start somewhere. I spend a lot of time with each person trying to teach them the basics and it’s very satisfying when you see they figure it out and start catching fish. Most new groups will not get it the first time out.
The average catch has been 15-30 fish and should only get better as the weather stabilizes. We did hook into a couple of nice size females today and that’s the first I’ve seen drifting around the reefs this season.
I do have next Sunday morning morning available (May 9) if anyone is interested in catching walleye on flipping harnesses and Spinners let me know.
Take care and hope to fish with you soon.
Best way to contact me is call or text, I only get on FB once a week!

It’s been a great fishing season despite all the issues along the way with this Covid stuff. The plan was to pull the boat Sept 28 however I’ve gotten several calls and booked some trips into October so now the plan is to stay in the water until mid October so if your looking for a charter give me a call. I have a bunch off open dates during the last week of September and the first 2 weeks of October!!
I am willing to try for perch if that’s what you want, let me know!

Yesterday we spent two hours trying to find a school of fish (like I found on Tuesday) so that we can cast with no luck, so we dug out the planer boards and settled for trolling which is precise fishing with limits almost a guarantee. A few hours later we were limited out! I’ve reached that point in my business that the groups that I run are almost all my friends and we have a great time laughing, busting balls and just enjoying a day on the water.
Thank you John, Dan, Bob, Owin & Turk Kabay guys like you are the reason I do this!

********** Casting for Walleye in Ashtabula Ohio*********

All I can say is Unbelievable!
On Tuesday morning I loaded up with a group of Amish guys from Dubois PA, pulled away from the dock at 4:50am and started the difficult task of finding a school of Walleye big enough to cast on. After steaming out of the Ashtabula River we made a turn to the west & the hunt was on. I set a course toward the commercial perch nets 9 miles to the west because the day before we did really good trolling there. I’m constantly watching the fish finder and about half way to my destination I noticed several marks on the screen so I slowed down & what I seen got me excited like a kid on Christmas morning. We grabbed our rods and dug out the slimy grimy’s (Night Crawlers) and after a brief tutorial on how to use a flipping harness the guys began casting. The first walleye came on an 11 count and then the rest of the charter was a blur, I couldn’t get there fast enough with the net it was like every cast “fish on”. Everyone was catching and having an absolute blast, Even I couldn’t help myself so I grabbed a fishing pole and caught my six fish also. Catching walleye while casting in the central basin of Lake Erie was unheard of just a couple years ago. Days like this is why I love my job, I just wish all of my groups could experience a day like this because it was literally and probably will always be the best casting charter ever done on the Taylor Made 2 in Ashtabula. I don’t know how we could ever top June 16, 2020, that day will be remembered by Ben Troyer & myself for a long, long, long, long time! Talk about a fish story & this one happens to be true!!!!!

************Week of June 8 fishing report***************
The walleye bite out of Ashtabula it’s getting better daily, we have been starting out our mornings casting in shallow water and depending on multiple things ( weather, how good the guys are at it ) we’ve been doing pretty good. On Wednesday we did limit out casting worm harnesses however most days that’s not happening & we have to bust out the trolling gear! The big school of walleye just aren’t here yet and I believe the fish were catching now are mainly resident fish so that makes throwing worms more challenging, not impossible just tougher for groups that don’t have a lot of experience!!! My group of Amish on Wednesday have fished with me many times & they know what to do. I can put you on the fish and give you the best equipment money can buy but I can’t teach you in one trip how to set the hook, know what to do by what the bite felt like, sometimes they hit it very hard but most of the time you don’t even know they’re there, that comes with experience. However in my opinion that’s what makes casting for these walleye so much fun.
The trolling bite is great most days with 2-3 hour limits.

Thanks to everyone that has fished with me over the last, we had a great time and shared a lot of memories!!
Thanks, Capt. Jeff

It’s been another awesome week of fishing! Looks like the weather has finally stabilized, talk about 1 extreme to the next. Went from cold days with 20-30 mph winds to absolutely no wind and 80 degrees. The water temp has jumped from 55 to 67 degrees almost overnight. What a shock that is to the fish and to me, I finally put the pants away and now I’m trying to add some color to my Snow White legs, lol. So if your tired of being cooped up in the house give me a call!
I have 1 open day before I pack up all my toys and head East for Ashtabula.
Thank you to everyone who has fished with me this past week!

Stay safe!
Stay positive!
