The Eagle Tavern is one of the earliest surviving structures in Oconee County, built in 1803, when Watkinsville was a frontier town near Creek Indian territory. Some believe the site was once called Fort Edwards and served as a place of protection for early settlers. In the early 1800s, the tavern operated as a stagecoach stop, hotel and gathering place for travelers passing through Watkinsville. By 1827, stagecoaches from Milledgeville passed through three times a week, and travelers could spend the night at the tavern before continuing their journey.
Today, the Eagle Tavern serves as a museum where locals and tourists can explore its history and school groups can visit on field trips!
