I recently chaperoned a study abroad trip to Peru. The purpose of the trip was cultural and academic, and we had to fit in as much as we could in one week. So our itinerary was pretty different than a typical tourist’s. But we still hit a lot of the highlights!
If this exact itinerary were for my leisure trip, I wouldn’t be completely disappointed! I definitely wouldn’t schedule myself for a 3 am wakeup call to fly from Lima to Cusco, though...
What I loved
❤️ Honestly, the overall itinerary was great. I’m happy we got to see Lima (and stay in the vibrant Miraflores neighborhood), the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco. I checked all my boxes for a first trip to Peru!
❤️While our lodging was not all 4-5-star, they were all very comfortable, and the locations were fantastic.
❤️The time of year was perfect, and the weather was warmer than I anticipated. Because we were at the tail end of the rainy season, Machu Picchu was not too overcrowded when we went first thing in the morning.
❤️❤️❤️ Our tour guides were fantastic! I still miss them!
What I’d do differently
✅ If I were planning this trip for a client, I would select more 4-star (and less student-friendly) hotels. Peru has tons of boutique and luxury options.
✅ I’d definitely make the trip a minimum of 8 days, especially for folks interested in hiking.
✅ I’d build in more time in the Sacred Valley with visits to other towns. I loved Ollantaytambo and wanted to stay longer! This area is so full of culture and history and is less touristy than Aguas Calientes or Cusco.
✅ The food is incredible and should be highlighted on any trip. I’d love to do a cooking class or pisco sour class!
