Founders Hall at Athens State University dates back to the 1840s, and it has a few legends of its own. One local tale tells of a young student whose story is said to linger within its historic walls.

A little investment today can open a lot of doors tomorrow.

Athens State University is helping shape what’s next for Athens-Limestone County with $1 million in appropriations secured for the renovation of Carter Hall.

Imagine the possibilities: hands-on learning, new pathways to high-skilled careers, and resources that help local businesses find and develop the talent they need. This is more than a campus renovation—it’s an investment in the people, skills, and opportunities that keep our community moving forward.

Named in honor of the late Tommy Carter, the future center will carry a lasting legacy while helping prepare the next generation.

For visitors, students, businesses, and families, this is another reminder that Athens-Limestone County is a place where history and progress go hand in hand.

🌿 200 Years of History. One Special Community Celebration.

Step back in time this Saturday as Poplar Creek Cemetery celebrates its bicentennial! Join us for a meaningful morning honoring the people, stories, and history that have shaped our community for 200 years.

📅 Saturday, October 17
⏰ 10 AM–1 PM

Here’s what you can look forward to:
🎶 Live gospel music from Soul Purpose Gospel Group
🪦 Guided cemetery tours exploring the cemetery’s rich history
🇺🇸 Members of the Thomas H. Hobbs Camp #768 sharing stories of veterans laid to rest there, dressed in military uniforms and displaying historical relics
🥤 Refreshments and community fellowship

This is a wonderful opportunity to discover local history, honor those who came before us, and celebrate a landmark that has been part of our community for two centuries.

🌧️ In case of inclement weather, Poplar Creek Baptist Church, located next to the cemetery, will be open if needed.
