🇩🇲 The Kalinago People (historically labeled “Carib Indians” by European colonizers) are the Indigenous First Peoples of Dominica, the Lesser Antilles AND the Caribbean — descendants of powerful seafaring nations who migrated from the Orinoco region of South America and established communities across the Caribbean long before European contact.
Before colonization, the Kalinago were skilled navigators, canoe builders, fishers, and farmers, living across islands like Dominica, St. Vincent, and beyond. Historical records show they maintained strong resistance against European invasion for over 200 years, making them one of the last Indigenous groups in the Caribbean to remain largely unconquered during early colonial expansion ([Indigenous Peoples Database][1]).
The term “Carib” was imposed by Europeans and often linked to exaggerated claims of cannibalism used to justify colonization — a narrative now widely recognized by historians as colonial propaganda and misinterpretation of Indigenous culture and language ([Indigenous Peoples Database][2]).
Today, the Kalinago Territory in Dominica remains home to the last surviving Indigenous community of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean, preserving language fragments, craft traditions, and ancestral knowledge despite centuries of displacement and colonial pressure.
