“Come up for air.”
A simple but powerful piece of leadership advice shared during last night’s Executive Panel at Signature Select in Charlotte.
Katie Aittola of Duke Energy, Shannon Kelso of Cardinal Health, Jackie Paryz of Securitas, and Peter Vaughn of Vaughn Advisory Group joined Signature Leaders faculty Kim Jones and Carol Seymour for a candid conversation about what leadership requires as responsibility and influence grow.
A few insights worth sharing:
• 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬. In uncertainty, stay grounded in the mission and the outcome you’re working toward. Confidence isn’t about knowing exactly how you’ll get there. It’s showing your team that you trust you’ll figure it out together.
• 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐢𝐫. As your scope grows, so must your perspective. Step out of the day-to-day, connect the dots, and understand how your work contributes to what the enterprise needs most.
• 𝐁𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩.Your words, tone, energy, and presence carry more weight as you lead. People are paying attention, especially when the pressure rises.
• 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦. Mentors, sponsors, advocates, and even the “silent” supporters you build along the way can expand your perspective, open doors, and help you see possibilities you may not see for yourself.
Thank you to our panelists for sharing your experiences so openly with our Select leaders, and to Securitas for hosting us in Charlotte.
