Americans will soon be banned from entering the Bahamas due to still spiking rates of Covid-19 infections.

The Bahamas reopened three weeks ago but is rolling back access for travelers from the US starting at midnight on Wednesday July 22.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis made the decision due to the 'exponential rate since we reopened our international borders.'

The Bahamas ministry of health said there have been 49 new cases since borders were reopened.

"Our current situation demands decisive action, if we are to avoid being overrun and defeated by this virus," Minnis said.

"We cannot allow our hospitals to be overrun. Many priorities must be balanced, be they health, social and economic."

Bahamasiar has stopped operating inbound flights from the US but will still have outbound services for tourists to get home.

Travelers from Canada, the UK, and Europe are still welcome with proof of a negative Covid-19 rapid test result.

If you purchased an airline ticket that the airline canceled or changed the schedule to the point it no longer worked for you, they are to refund your purchase. If you decide you do not want to fly and you cancel your ticket then the airline will hold your funds as a credit. Because of Covid-19 some airlines have extended the period you have to use your funds.

Coronavirus screening expanded to 20 US airports

The US will significantly expand airport screening of travelers from China.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officers will screen at another 15 airports.

Thermal health screenings are already ongoing at five airports - New York JFK, San Francisco International Airport, Los Angeles, Chicago's O'Hare and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"We are constantly preparing for the possibility that the situation could worsen," health secretary Alex Azar said.

"Americans should not worry about their own safety. Part of the risk we face is we don't know everything we need to know about this virus ... That does not prevent us from preparing and responding."

The expanded screening will see CDC officers at airports including Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Seattle, Minneapolis-St Paul, Anchorage Newark and Boston.

It also includes offshore airports Honolulu and Puerto Rico's San Juan Airport.

Together, these 20 airports receive about 90% of all passenger traffic from China.

The CDC has advised Americans to avoid all non-essential travel to China.

The agency said there are now 110 people under observation for possible coronavirus infection across 26 states, although there is no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission within the US.

So far there are five confirmed cases.

US upgrades China travel warning

The US is urging all Americans to avoid travel to China.

The State Department raised the travel warning for Hubei province to level 4 insisting it has 'limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens' in the province.

The government is arranging evacuation flights of all non-emergency personnel and their families from the Hubei region, and other US citizens if space allows.

A US official said about 1,000 Americans live in Wuhan.

Beyond Hubei, it updated its China travel warning to level 3, which urges U S citizens to 'reconsider travel' to the country.

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued its highest travel warning level advising Americans to postpone travel plans to China due to the coronavirus outbreak.

So far 80 people have died and there are nearly 3,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

About 700 new cases a day have been reported over the past few days.

Public transportation around the Hubei region is extremely limited with air, bus and rail services suspended.

The CDC is urging all travellers to seek advice from a medical professional first, especially elderly or those with existing medical conditions.

Carnival Corp to help fund Bahamas hospital rebuild

Carnival Corporation and plc is to help fund the restoration of the main hospital on Grand Bahama Island, which suffered significant damage when the region was hit by Hurricane Dorian.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed with The Bahamas to repair the building and replace damaged medical equipment at Rand Memorial Hospital, in Freeport.

The plan is for the hospital to be up and running by the end of March 2020.

The project is expected to include the completion of a new kitchen that was partially constructed prior to the storm, but was damaged by Dorian.

Working with a project coordinator that will have day-to-day oversight of all elements of the project, Carnival Corporation and the Government of The Bahamas will coordinate with collaborative partners in support of the restoration efforts, including Direct Relief, an international relief organisation that provides critical medications and supplies during emergencies; World Central Kitchen, a food relief organisation that serves meals to local communities following a crisis; the Grand Bahama Shipyard based in Freeport and the University of Miami, among others.

During the restoration process, Carnival Corporation will support World Central Kitchen's continued provisioning of daily meals for patients and staff as part of an ongoing partnership following the storm.

Marie McKenzie, vice president of global ports and Caribbean government relations for Carnival Corporation, said: "In support of overall recovery efforts in The Bahamas, we have worked with government and community leaders to determine meaningful ways we can help that will deliver a lasting impact, and our shared mission to support the restoration of Rand Memorial Hospital exemplifies that commitment.

"This restoration project is crucial for the health needs of residents, while also supporting the longer-term vitality of the community and is indicative of the rebuilding progress on the island.

"Along with our partners, we look forward to supporting the government's efforts to reopen Rand Memorial Hospital as an important step in the overall recovery of Grand Bahama Island."
