🚨 IMPORTANT EES UPDATE FOR TRAVELLERS TO EUROPE 🇪🇺
If you’re travelling to the Schengen Area after 6 September 2026, here’s an important EES update to know.
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) is already operational at Europe’s external borders. It digitally records the entry and exit of eligible non-EU travellers instead of relying on traditional passport stamps.
đź“… What changes from 6 September?
The temporary flexibility that allowed border authorities to pause biometric EES registration during exceptionally busy periods comes to an end.
This means biometric processing is expected to continue even when borders are busy, so longer queues and delays are possible, particularly at busy airports and border crossing points.
🛂 At the border, eligible travellers may have:
• Passport details recorded
• A facial image captured
• Fingerprints collected
• Entry and exit recorded digitally
⏰ What should you do?
Allow extra time for your first Schengen entry and when leaving the Schengen Area, especially if you have a tight onward connection.
EES does not replace a visa and is not the same as ETIAS.
Some travellers are exempt from EES, including certain residence permit and long-stay visa holders. Always check the official EU guidance for your specific situation.
