This chart is showing how Carnival Cruise Line organizes its cruise ships into different “classes.”
A **ship class** is basically a family of ships that were built using a similar design, layout, size, and technology. Think of it like car models:
* Honda Civic = one class
* Honda Accord = another class
Cruise lines do the same thing with ships.
Here’s how to read the chart:
---
# What the Columns Mean
# # # Ship Name
Example: *Carnival Celebration*
That is the actual ship you sail on.
---
# # # Class
Example: *Excel Class*
This tells you which “family” the ship belongs to.
Ships in the same class usually have:
* similar layouts
* similar restaurants
* similar entertainment
* similar cabin styles
* similar size
---
# # # GT = Gross Tonnage
This is NOT the ship’s weight.
It measures the **overall internal volume/size** of the ship.
Bigger GT usually means:
* more restaurants
* more decks
* more activities
* more passengers
Examples:
* Fantasy Class ≈ 70,000 GT
* Excel Class ≈ 180,000 GT
So Excel ships are MASSIVE compared to older Fantasy ships.
---
# # # GC = Guest Capacity
This means approximately how many passengers the ship can hold.
Example:
* GC: 5,374 = about 5,374 guests
That does NOT include crew members.
---
# # # R = Registry
This tells which country the ship is legally registered under (“flagged”).
Examples:
* Panama
* Bahamas
Cruise ships are often registered outside the U.S. for tax/labor/legal reasons.
