Today is the feast day for St. Giles. He was born to a wealthy family and gave his fortune to the poor. He was known as a sage and miracle worker and he served as the first abbot of the monastery of Saint Gilles du Gard. Once, an arrow accidentally shot by a hunting party struck him, leading to him becoming the patron saint of the physically disabled.

Today is the feast day for two saints!
St. Louis of France was king of France from 1226 until his death in 1270. He was known for opening hospitals, visiting the sick, and feeding the poor at and near his castle.
St. Joseph Calasanz became a priest in 1583. He would educate the poor and homeless in a time where many others would not. He founded some of the first free schools in Rome. He was friends with Galileo Galilei and always treated him justly even when his views put him in danger.
The ideals that both these saints held about treating the poor, the homeless, the sick and the accused can inspire us today.
