Cruise Industry 10-Year Timeline: 50+ Million Guests, 20% Growth

The global cruise business is on course to grow at least 20 percent between 2026 and 2036, with big new ships driving growth to an estimated 50 million guests, according to the 2026 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

That is compared to just over 23 million guests 10 years ago, and an estimated 39 million this year.

The bulk of the growth is coming from the industry’s major players that have numerous new big ships on order, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, MSC Cruise, Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line.

Together these five brands have a combined 34 ships on order amounting to just over 150,000 new berths.

The most growth is coming from MSC, with 10 newbuilds set to debut. The new ships from the industry’s fastest-growing will include more World-class vessels built in France, and entirely new class of vessel set to be constructed in Germany at Meyer Werft.

Norwegian Cruise Line is close behind with eight ships on order, adding more than 36,000 berths through 2037 as the brand continues to scale its large-ship fleet at Fincantieri in Italy.

Royal Caribbean International has six newbuilds scheduled, building on the success of its Icon-class platform with additional vessels from both Meyer Turku in Finland and Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France.

Carnival Cruise Line has five ships on order totaling nearly 30,000 berths, with new tonnage coming from both Meyer Werft and Fincantieri.

Disney Cruise Line, meanwhile, is accelerating its own expansion with five ships set to debut through 2031, more than doubling its current fleet size and extending its reach into new global markets.

The combined orderbook across all cruise lines stands at 78 ocean ships valued at approximately $80 billion, reflecting the industry’s confidence in sustained long-term demand.

How much does a Travel Advisor charge for their services. Well, for Covert Travel, there is never a service fee nor do we "mark-up" the cost of a cruise. Covert Travel works on commission paid by the cruise lines. The price you pay is the same price as you would by booking directly with the Cruise Line.

Direct Booking "Tax": If you book direct with the Cruise line via either phone or their website, the "commission" amount is still built into the price; the cruise line simply keeps that money rather than paying it to a Travel Advisor who would provide you with service.

Exceptions: Some high-end or boutique travel agencies may charge a nominal consultation or service fee (typically $15–$30) for their time, though many waive this for repeat clients.

Why not just enjoy the benefit of concierge cruise planning service with Covert Travel.

Choosing the right cruise itinerary isn't as easy as you might think. After we've helped you pick the right Cruise Line based on your travel style and preferences, the next big step is picking the right itinerary.

Just to give you a sense of your options. Royal Caribbean ships visit 300 destinations across 61 countries. Additionally, there are 50 departure ports to choose from. You could easily spend hours upon hours researching itineraries. Or, you could let Covert Travel do all that work for you.

Each port of call has many, many options for "excursions". You can book excursions directly through the cruise line, Shore Excursion Group, private 3rd parties, Viator etc. Covert Travel can help you decide "how" you're going to purchase your excursions and will explain to you the pro's and con's of each option.

Because Linda and I have been on over 20 cruises, we've taken a lot of excursions and can provide you with some first hand experience on which ones we thought were great.

Why use Covert Travel to plan your next cruise vacation?

We do all the work for you, eliminating the stress, confusion and from making a poor choice. Some of the key decisions that we'll work with you to make while putting together a perfect cruise vacation are:

Strategic Cabin Placement
A cruise line’s website will often just show you "available" rooms. Covert Travel looks at deck plans to ensure you aren't directly under the pool deck (think scraping chairs at 6:00 AM).
Or, right above the nightclub or theater (Unless you want to feel the heavy bass late at night). Or, in a "guaranteed" cabin which is cheeper, but could also end up giving you an obstructed view. Nothing could be more disappointing then looking out your balcony at a big orange lifeboat.

Comparing the "Vibe" Across Lines
With so many new ships, like Royal Caribbean’s Icon or Star of the Seas, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Every cruise line has its own vibe and unique amenities. We'll help you decide if you'd prefer:
The high-energy, mega-resort feel of Royal Caribbean.
The "Freestyle," flexible dining approach of Norwegian.
The more traditional, service-oriented atmosphere of a premier line like Princess or Celebrity.

These are just two important factors that go into planning your cruise vaction. There's not a website that will help you navigate these decisions. That's where Covert Travel comes in. Watch for upcoming posts about our 10th anniversary booking bonus.

In June of this year, I'll be celebrating my tenth year of operating Covert Travel. There will be a celebration for sure, and there will be a special bonus for booking with us. Stay tuned.

Why, you ask should you use a Travel Advisor like me to book your cruise vacation? I'm glad you asked. I'll share a few reasons in the coming posts leading up to our tenth anniversary sale.

For starters... Using a travel advisor for a cruise is like having a "ship’s concierge" before you even leave home. While booking direct is possible, a specialized cruise advisor (Covert Travel) has expert knowledge of cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, or Princess and others. Travel Advisors often times can provide you with advantages a website simply can't.

The "Hidden" Inventory & Perks
Covert Travel belongs to large travel consortia that blocks out groups of cabins years in advance. This gives you access to:
Lower Group Rates: Even if you’re just a couple, you can often be "added" to one of our existing group blocks to get a lower price than the cruise line's public site.
Bonus Onboard Credit: You’ll frequently see an extra $50–$100 in "Spendable Cash" added to your account just for booking through us.

Keep an eye out for our 10th anniversary sale.
