Running since 1865, the St. Charles Streetcar is the oldest operational streetcar line in the world and you can ride it for only $1.25. Many people take the beautiful open air ride along the live oak-lined avenue to see the opulent mansions. These large homes used to flank most of the streetcar line, but nowadays most of the remaining mansions are between Napoleon Avenue and Audubon Park.

Pro tip: The RTA system is cash only and they return your change on a change card that you can use for future rides. For $3 you can also get a day pass, which lets you hop on and off as many times as you like. If you don't want to deal with exact change or you want to know when the next streetcar is coming, download the RTA GoMobile app. The arrival times they provide tend not to be accurate, but if you look at the tracker map you can see how far away the next car is.

For $37 per ticket, a historically costumed guide will walk you through 12 gallery spaces decorated with artifacts and displays about the nationwide ban of alcohol. Each tour comes with a period accurate cocktail (or mocktail) from Congress Street Up, the museum’s upstairs speakeasy.

Established under South Carolina's Church Act of 1706, Old St. Andrew's Parish Church was built the same year and is the oldest surviving church in the Carolinas. It is also South Carolina's only remaining colonial cruciform church.

In its early years, some of Charleston's richest families attended services in the building. However, as the price of rice became less profitable in the mid-1800s, many white families left the area. Those white families owned some of the area's largest plantations and they left behind their enslaved laborers with their departure. By 1868, 533 of the 548 Old St. Andrew parishioners were Black.

Reverend John Grimke Drayton, a plantation owner, led the Old St. Andrew's congregation for more than 40 years. Upon his death in 1891, the church was abandoned and sat dormant for 57 years. In 1948, a group of Episcopalians reopened the church and have worked to restore it since.

Old St. Andrew's was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Scroll through to see the church then and now.

In the 1970s, famed Philadelphia producer Kenny Gamble saw the impact of the Country Music Association's Country Music Month in October and set out to create something similar for Black Music. In 1978, he created the Black Music Association and enlisted the likes of Stevie Wonder, Berry Gordy, Jesse Jackson, DJ Ed Write, and media strategist Dyana Williams to support his new organization.

Less than one year later, on June 7, 1979 President Jimmy Carter, hosted the first Black Music Month gathering of the White House South lawn.

In 2000, President Bill Clinton recognized Black Music Month in an official proclamation and in 2009, President Barack Obama renamed the commemoration African-American Music Appreciation Month.

Our city guides are filled with stops that celebrate the history of Black music. Some of our favorites include: National Museum of African American Music () in Nashville, The Victory Grill () in Austin, and All Bout Dat Tours () in New Orleans. Get started at WanderlyTravel.com.

Cold treats are the best way to beat the sweltering heat! And these James Beard Award-winning sno-balls at Hansen's Sno-Bliz are some of the best you will ever enjoy. This treat is finer and fluffier than its coarser cousin, the snow cone, due to an ice shaving machine invented by Ernest Hansen in 1933. Six years later, he coupled his ice with his wife Mary's handmade syrups and opened Hansen's.

Today, the shop is run by the Hansen's granddaughter, Ashley, who continues to serve up over 35 flavors of sno-balls, with everything from tart (try Satsuma), to cream (Cream of Nectar is a favorite), as well as the classic flavors available at every sno-ball stand. When you stop by, the line will probably be out the door — but trust us, these sno-balls are well worth the wait! 📸

"This mural is symbol of hope. It is a sign post that good will always overcome evil. A reminder that when we stand as one, anything is possible. For many years, peoples of the African diaspora have challenged and protested their oppressed livelihood to make a more equal and equitable life for themselves and their future relatives to enjoy. Even though we are all needed to make change, there are always leaders, organizers, and social catalysts that must step forward against the inequality and violence their communities have experienced. Depicted in this mural (from left to right) are Deitrick Hamilton, Johnny Holmes, Doris Miller, Dorothy Turner, Gary Clark Jr, Mikaela Ulmer, and Charles Overton. These great men and woman represent the strength and diversity Austin has to overcome great tragedy in pursuit of a peaceful happiness." -
