East Austin has changed *a lot* over the last few years, but we like to celebrate this neighborhood’s living history.

Beyond being one of the best cocktail bars in the city, is also a monument to the cultural and political history of the East Side. Originally opened by Rosalio “Rabbit” Duran in 1969 as Rabbit’s Lounge, the neighborhood watering hole became a hub for Chicano politics in Austin. The upstairs mezcal bar was once a revolving campaign headquarters for 40 years worth of candidates seeking office.

When Rabbit decided to pass his business along in 2011, he stipulated that the feel of the century-old building should remain. The good folks who run Whisler’s honored the important history of their new bar by keeping and restoring the iconic murals of Cesar Chavez and other labor movement icons. Sadly, we lost Rabbit Duran this past August, but his legacy lives on at Whisler’s where the old “Rabbit’s” mural still greets us over the front entrance.
