The Northern Bald Ibis is one of the world’s most distinctive and historically threatened birds. Once widespread across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, the species disappeared from Europe in the 17th century, driven by hunting and habitat loss. Today, its main truly wild population survives along the Atlantic coast of Morocco.
The story of its return to Europe is one of conservation’s most inspiring chapters. Pioneered by the Austrian-based Waldrappteam over more than 20 years ago, juvenile ibises are guided from breeding colonies in Austria and Germany to their wintering grounds by following ultralight aircraft. In 2025, the reintroduced population in Andalusia recorded a record breeding season, with 47–51 breeding pairs reported and 56 chicks raised in the wild.
The Northern Bald Ibis can be encountered on two exceptional VENT tours —on our Southern Spain in Winter tour with Raymond VanBuskirk (January 16–28, 2027), and among the dunes of Morocco’s Atlantic coast on our Morocco tour with Brian Gibbons (March 13–28, 2027).
