A flashback to meeting up once again with our old friend at his home among the olive groves above Torre Salsa. Danny is the gentle soul and culinary creative behind “The Good Kitchen,” a volunteer-run community kitchen, social enterprise, and charity located in Mussomeli, Sicily. A place where community can cook and eat together in a shared, welcoming, judgement-free space.
At its heart, the kitchen tackles some of inland Sicily’s quiet crises. Elderly townspeople, “nonnas” and “nonnos” increasingly left behind as local youth move away can find here a warm meal and familiar faces. Young people, facing some of the highest unemployment rates in the region, find structure, culinary training, and a sense of purpose. And through it all, over 19 tons of food has been rescued from waste, with local farmers collecting any remaining organic scraps to feed their livestock.
His book, “The Good Kitchen: Love and Connection Through Food,” is a heartfelt narrative that tells the story behind all of this — the surplus food rescued from supermarkets, the vegetarian meals cooked with care for lonely, elderly, and vulnerable townspeople, and the community built around a shared table. All royalties are donated directly back to fund the operations and community efforts of The Good Kitchen.
