Thirty minutes past Ronda, the road turns to gravel and the rest of the world quietly disappears.

This is Finca La Donaira. Nine rooms on seventeen hundred acres of Andalucian mountain, and almost nothing on the estate that didn't come from it. The vegetables, the wine, the wagyu, the shampoo and soap in your room, the horses they breed by hand. You eat what the garden grew that morning and what the land raised.

You can dine anywhere here. The terrace, the gardens, a table set under the mountains. I chose the high table in the kitchen, in the middle of everything, every plate Michelin-worthy and served on the most beautiful mismatched French pieces I have ever seen.

The details are what stay with you. A spa that makes its own everything. Their own winery. A gentle horsemanship demonstration that felt more like a conversation than a show. A gardener who turned out to be a former ballet dancer, and the owner's brother.

Elegance, the quiet kind. The kind you only know about if you know.

Salzburg under fresh snow.

This is Sphaera, in Kapitelplatz. Stephan Balkenhol made it in 2007 for the Salzburg Foundation, which spent years adding one contemporary artwork a year to the baroque old town. The man on top is meant to be no one in particular. Plain shirt, dark trousers, an everyman standing on a golden world with a 900-year-old fortress next to him.

Now the part I love. Balkenhol made a second figure the same year. A woman, tucked into a rock wall a few streets away. He stands on top of the world where nobody can miss him. She watches from the shadows where almost nobody finds her. The artist has never explained the pair, so Salzburg has been arguing about it for almost twenty years.

I only know any of this because I had a brilliant guide. Thousands of people walk past her every day and see a wall. This is the difference between visiting a city and being let in on it.

And as of this week, she's not even there. The artist just collected her for restoration, so for now the man on the golden ball is up there alone.

The world is full of stories like this. Just go.
