White Ibis – South Padre Island, TX

A White Ibis moves across the tidal flats of South Padre Island's Birding and Nature Center in the morning light. Its long, curved red bill probes through shallow water, expertly locating hidden crustaceans beneath the surface. The blue eye stands out against its white plumage, a striking feature at close range. Planning a birding trip starts long before the suitcase comes out.

Next week we’re heading to Costa Rica, and one of the first tools we use to plan our birding is eBird.

Before every trip we check:
✔️ Birding hotspots
✔️ Recent checklists
✔️ Species distribution maps
✔️ Our own life lists to see what could be new

It’s like having thousands of birders helping you plan your trip.

We wrote a short blog explaining exactly how we do it.
Read it here → link in bio

What’s the first thing you check when planning a birding trip? 👇

A rare Summer Tanager spotted in Qualicum Beach over Valentine’s weekend created rare winter excitement on Vancouver Island. This bright yellow individual, this bird was a female or immature, shows olive upperparts and a thick pale bill. Summer Tanagers breed in the southern United States and rarely are seen in British Columbia. This makes a Qualicum Beach sighting highly sought after for Canadian birding tours. If you’re interested in rare birding experiences, the Rare Summer Tanger sighting this winter on Vancouver Island was truly special. A cool fact is their nickname, “bee bird,” for catching bees and wasps in flight. Backyard feeders with mixed seed can briefly attract wandering individuals during unusual winter movements. Rare birds of British Columbia can be found on the Rare Bird Alert here

Birders are flocking to the San Juan River in Port Renfrew, BC, to see two very rare Taiga Bean Geese. These uncommon Eurasian visitors have been consistently hanging out in the river over the last couple months. This offers a remarkable opportunity for West Coast birding enthusiasts. Taiga Bean Geese show dark chocolate-brown heads, pale-edged gray bodies, and a black bill with a bold orange band. Their presence in the waters of the San Juan River has created excitement among local birders and visiting listers alike. These geese are extremely rare in British Columbia, making this Port Renfrew sighting especially significant. For anyone interested in rare birds in BC these two geese are a must-see highlight.
