🏡 Avon Cottages Are Storm-Free & Fall-Ready! 🍁🎣

We’ve had a lot of messages asking how Avon Cottages held up after Hurricane Erin — and we’re happy to say: no damage here! Everything is in great shape, and we’re open and welcoming guests for a beautiful fall season.

If you’re planning a fall fishing trip or just want a peaceful escape to the Outer Banks, our cozy, classic cottages are the perfect home base. Just a short walk to the beach and close to the best fishing spots, Avon Cottages are ideal for anglers, couples, and families looking to enjoy the quiet side of the OBX.

Here’s an update from the awesome crew at NCDOT!

Good news! Reinforcements have arrived from Tyrrell, Hyde and Currituck counties to help us with the recovery process on NC 12. We are very grateful for their help!

At this point, we'd like to answer the dozens of questions we're receiving about a timeline to reopen the highway. The answer is, we don't have one yet. Before we can schedule a reopening, three things need to happen:

1. Hurricane Erin needs to STOP sending us her ocean overwash. The coastal flood advisory ends at 1 a.m. tomorrow, so we're hopeful that the tides will be kinder to us going forward.

2. We need to repair the dune breaches and clear the highway of standing water and sand, and then check to make sure there is no pavement damage (so far, we have no indications of any pavement damage).

3) Assuming no pavement damage, we clear the road as best we can so it is safe to travel and then reopen it. If there is pavement damage, that will be a longer process.

We understand that Saturday is 'turnaround day' on the Outer Banks. We understand how badly you want to get here. Trust us, no one wants to see this highway reopened more than we do.

When we have a timeline on reopening, we will say so here. We will issue a press release. We'd shout it from the mountaintops if there were any mountains around here to shout it from.

But safety is Job One, and we won't be reopening Highway 12 until it is safe to do so.

We will post more information here when it becomes available.

Here’s a quick update on the road conditions getting to Avon! Still no answer for certain as to when everything will reopen, but we will keep everyone posted!

For any guests planning to arrive between Monday, August 18 - Thursday, August 21, there has been a mandatory evacuation issued for Hatteras Island. This means visitors cannot travel onto the island. At this time, we are not certain exactly how long this will last. Please comment with any questions or give us a call at (252) 995-4123 to discuss reservation specifics. We’ll be sure to keep everyone updated as the storm passes!

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for Hatteras Island, which is designated as Zone A. Zone A includes all of Hatteras Island, including the unincorporated villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras.

• Mandatory visitor evacuation: All visitors in Zone A must evacuate beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18.
• Mandatory resident evacuation: All residents in Zone A must evacuate beginning at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Officials are urging residents and visitors to make final preparations, secure property, and evacuate with all personal belongings.
