A company started in memory of his late wife, Melinda Ann Elwell, Chef Rich Elwell has turned his wife’s passion for delectable desserts into a gourmet chocolate shop that has now grown from a local production to now serving national food distributors.

In honor or Avondale’s 80th birthday this year, we’re diving into some local history to uncover the stories behind our favorite parks. First up: Doc Rhodes Plaza! 🌳

Did you know this cozy corner in Old Town used to be a gas station? In an effort to beautify the neighborhood, members of the United Methodist Church stepped up to transform the lot while honoring one of their own: Tracy Clarenton Rhodes, better known as “T.C. ‘Doc’ Rhodes.” 

Who was “Doc” Rhodes you ask? Born in 1899, Doc Rhodes served in the Arizona State House of Representatives for 16 years! A dedicated community leader and neighbor, Doc left behind a legacy of service to the City of Avondale and State of Arizona. 

Thanks to the generosity of the Rhodes family, the property was donated to the city to create the plaza and pocket park we know and love today.
