Charleston County Emergency Management is closely monitoring a low-pressure system developing directly off the coast. According to the latest information from the US National Weather Service Charleston SC, the system is expected to push inland across coastal SC and GA tomorrow into Thursday, with possible impacts including:

• Rainfall totals of 1-3 inches, with isolated higher amounts of over 5 inches possible. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
• Breezy conditions, particularly near the coast, with a chance of gusts exceeding 40 mph. This could create downed branches and isolated power outages.
• Rough seas and moderate rip current risk

If you encounter flooded roads, please turn around and use another route. Should you lose electricity, please report the outage to your electricity provider.

We will continue to monitor the system’s development and provide additional information as it becomes available.

OVERVIEW:
Low pressure could develop near the Florida and Georgia coast Wednesday and push inland across coastal South Carolina and
Georgia through Wednesday night. The system will bring unsettled conditions to the region, including locally heavy rainfall,
breezy conditions at the beaches and an increased risk for strong and frequent rip currents. There is a low chance that the
system could acquire tropical or subtropical characteristics before the system moves inland. The degree of impacts to the area
will be closely tied to the track and strength the area of low pressure takes. IMPORTANT: Impacts to the area will be the same
whether the system becomes a tropical or subtropical cyclone or remains a weak, non-tropical low pressure system.

SC FORESTRY COMMISSION ISSUING STATEWIDE BURNING BAN

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 6 p.m. today.

A State Forester’s Burning Ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.

Forestry Commission officials say weather conditions over the next several days present a greatly elevated risk of wildfire. The high winds and gusts that prompted the agency to issue a Red Flag Fire Alert yesterday are expected to persist across the state through the weekend.

Additionally, extremely low relative humidities – reaching below 30% in most areas – add to the fire danger.

“The combination of gusty winds and low relative humidity is a recipe for wildfires igniting easily and spreading rapidly,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones, “especially when you add to the mix the abundance of dry, late-winter fuels on the ground.”

The ban will stay in effect until further notice, which will come in the form of an official announcement from the Forestry Commission.
