A Relic:

On the banks of the Potomac, near the town of Westernport lies this beauty. I don't know what it is or who it belongs to but it sits just a few feet away the train tracks that hug the North Branch of the Potomac for miles.

For me it's a reminder of the myriad ways rivers have been used by people, far beyond their recreational value as fisheries. For generations rivers were the backbone of American industry, single handedly building cities and towns. The intensity in which this was done makes it a wonder many rivers hold fish at all. Many don't.

It's easy to say Americans didn't know any better, that it was the cost of growth...but we did know better. We took the land from native people who knew better. We knew what mining, clear cutting and heavy industry did to our waterways and we wrote it off.

I have no resentment towards the industries of our past, it seems like a waste of effort. I do know that as tightly as industry and rivers were intertwined they can still be separated. Both can prevail and thrive if we advocate for that future.

It's just a matter of looking at the consequences as diligently as we evaluate the gains. It's a matter of looking at the rusted out, faded relics of our past and asking ourselves if that was truly the best way.

No fly fishing but just enjoying some of beautiful Baltimore from a canoe.

It's pretty amazing to think about what this harbor might have looked like before humans chose to do so much damage to it. We often frame environmental issues as if they are borderline blameless, or in a way that neglects to really point a figure at a culprit. The state of the Baltimore harbor is not an accident or some divine occurence....its the result of generations of greed and negligence, largely driven by the almighty dollar.

From a canoe this place is still beautiful...tired, a little worn around the edges, but still winking back, reminding us of what it could be. I don't know how to get it there but I'm certain that it requires dismantling some of the systems we have grown accustomed to. The same systems that exploit humans for profit. The same systems that pollute negligently. The same systems that isolate people from the natural resources they have a right to enjoy.

BIG old Friday evening to ya. Excited to show off this new logo my talented friend pulled together for this new year of Fishercat River Co. (His work had been cool since our college days so I couldn't be more excited we got to work together on this.)

Last year was obviously a hard one for everyone (and to be clear this pandemic is far from over) but we still managed to make some new friends and get a whole host of rookies out on the water. That is going to continue to be our focus this coming year. If we learned anything from last year it's that being on the water with kind people is a really killer way to spend a day.

As always, we're looking to create new relationship, establish unique collaborations (like the one we got going with today. Check out his YouTube channel) and push the envelope on who fly fishing is catered to. Book your trips on our website or reach out @ [email protected] with questions.

Lastly...for anyone who doesn't know what a Fishercat is or where this logo comes from, ( is disappointed in you) we included a photo of this rad beast on the final slide. They're our favorite, hence the name!

For all you environmental enthusiasts out there , a little book recommendation. " The Source" by Martin Doyle was an exciting read about the way rivers have shaped the formation, both literal and figurative, of the United States (for better or worse).

As far as a book about rivers goes, I found it hard to put down. For anglers it sheds a lot of light on just how heavily manipulated our resources are, something we should keep in mind when talking about native species, land rights, access and "property." Get yourself a copy from a local book store (Baltimore folks: ). It has been out since 2018, but I only just got to it.

Alright...we're back on that instagram algorithm grind.

There is this somewhat pervasive idea that your business has to be a constant hustle and that if you're not breaking your back you're not doing it right.

We don't knock hard work but the idea that your livelihood has to almost break you isn't useful. It means we get to point fingers at the less fortunate and claim that somehow if they only hustled harder they would do better. Hard work does not translate into financial well being in this country.

On a more trivial level it also means that you constantly feel like you have to feed social media so people know you haven't quit.

Well we definitely haven't quit. We're excited for the new season and rapidly filling up our available days. We're going to guide as much as we want with the kindest, coolest people we can.

We're excited to teach, roll out some new products and designs and just enjoy our time outside. We wish all people had that privilege. Since we are lucky to be in this position we want to share it.
