Hope Lodge Baltimore The American Cancer Society saves lives and creates more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping

Getting emotional and social support from other survivors can be as important as getting the proper medical care. At the Hope Lodge, patients live with other people going through similar experiences, and are supported by caring staff and volunteers. The nurturing, comfortable environment at Hope Lodge allows patients to focus on what is most important - fighting cancer.

Anthony Clancy came all the way from Pembroke Pines, Florida to be treated for prostate cancer at Johns Hopkins, where his brother, an Eastern Shore Maryland resident, had also been treated for the same diagnosis. Anthony could not find a hospital near home that would treat his prostate cancer without surgery. He was determined to find another option.

Johns Hopkins Medicine offered him the option of hormone therapy followed by radiation therapy. “The other hospitals said they would have to remove my prostate,” says Anthony, who is very grateful that he was able to stay at Baltimore while he went through 39 radiation treatments.

When he rang the Hope Lodge bell before returning home to Florida, he had received good news from his doctors that his PSA count was down to zero.

“Hope Lodge is a Godsend. All the people here are going through the same kind of traumatic journey. Hope Lodge is an oasis of hope,” he says. “Thanks Hope Lodge and the for helping save my life.”

He also has this high praise for the Hope Lodge staff, “One of the keys of hope is having the supportive people who give off a positive vibe and are so good at problem solving.”

Anthony adds that he was able to rest, relax, eat healthy meals at Hope Lodge, and take advantage of the exercise equipment to maintain his physical fitness, which has been so important to his recovery.

Sinclair Cares Drive Out Cancer produced a fantastic special about the Road To Recovery program that provides free rides to treatment for cancer patients. More volunteer drivers are needed. Lodging and transportation are two of the greatest barriers for patients to complete cancer treatment. The American Cancer Society addresses both these challenges! More volunteer drivers are needed all over the country to help patients get to treatment. To volunteer, go to: cancer.org/drive

Baltimore launched our program with an engaged crowd of cancer survivors and Hope Lodge guests. University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center dieticians Ann Smith and Dannica Gavin gave a talk and recipe demonstration of a delicious healthy summer salad that we all got to sample. Texas Roadhouse DundalkMD served up healthful food for a delightful dinner, and our American Cancer Society Young Professionals Group led a Steve Harvey-themed Family Feud game that filled the room with laughter.

ACS EMPOWER is a complimentary educational initiative featuring in-person sessions at our 31 Hope Lodge communities nationwide that promote overall well-being, facilitate community connections, offer resources for navigating cancer, and deliver emotional support. It’s available to Hope Lodge guests, caregivers, and people with cancer in the surrounding community. The seven elements of ACS EMPOWER are aimed at physical resilience, fun, and self-expression which are integral to promoting emotional and physical health throughout their treatment journey. Pete Mariner of Salisbury, Maryland was looking forward to retiring from the U.S. Postal Service when he faced the news of a stage 1 throat cancer diagnosis last fall. He and his wife Gail decided to get a second opinion at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, where Pete was impressed by the precision with which they addressed his diagnosis and treatment plan. This led him to decide that Johns Hopkins was the best place for him to receive treatment.

However, living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, they faced a two-and-a-half hour drive each way for seven weeks of radiation oncology treatments. Fortunately, Johns Hopkins referred them to Hope Lodge, where they stayed for free. “If we had to stay in a hotel, we couldn’t have afforded treatment at Johns Hopkins,” said Pete.

“We couldn’t be more appreciative of Hope Lodge. The lodging was beautiful,” he added. “We thought we’d have to take food with us to prepare, but the very first day we arrived a volunteer group was hosting dinner. In fact, most of the time, groups hosted dinners which reduced the stress of preparing meals after a long day of treatment. The Mariners appreciated the free shuttle service to treatment which, they said, took the stress out of being in traffic and saved parking fees.

Additionally, the friendship and camaraderie that the Mariners experienced from other Hope Lodge guests gave them emotional support. “We made so many different connections with many people going through what we were. We were touched by a lot of their stories. We made really good friends and are getting a reunion together,” said Gail.

Gail and Pete spoke at the future Hope Lodge groundbreaking ceremony about the impact that Hope Lodge made during their cancer journey. Gail shared this beautiful Bible passage expressing their gratitude and strength in the journey with the theme of hope: “May the God of hope fill you with all the peace and joy, as you trust in him that you may overflow with hope…”

What an awesome day thanks to Walden University volunteers who began the morning with pastries and coffee for guests, provided lunch from Atwaters, spent the day creating beautifully decorated guest care bags, and wrapped up by cooking a delicious breakfast for dinner. Thank you to this wonderful, kindhearted group of people who were back for the second year in a row and said they'd return next year!

Hope Lodge Baltimore is making it possible for Duane Steiner of St. Petersburg, Florida to participate in a first-in-human clinical trial for his rare cancer. He is becoming a frequent flyer as this is Steiner’s 2nd stay at Hope Lodge with many more visits planned. Duane is a patient at Johns Hopkins where he has been receiving a vaccine for ALK-POSITIVE, a form of non-small cell lung cancer that is found in younger non-smoker patients. Only a dozen cancer centers nationwide specialize in this aggressive disease and John Hopkins is the only place for this particular trial. We commend Duane for his courage, as he is only the 14th patient in the world to have this lifesaving opportunity.

“Without Hope Lodge, participating in this clinical trial would be unaffordable and financially toxic,” said Steiner. “In addition, I would have gone stir-crazy by myself in a hotel. Knowing that I can talk to people at Hope Lodge who are going through their own cancer journey is reassuring and I don’t feel so alone. I flew from Tampa to Baltimore, so the free shuttle transportation to Hopkins has made this opportunity more affordable. Steiner is also grateful to be able to work remotely with the Lodge's internet and is appreciative of the organizations that volunteer and provide meals and activities.

Duane also explained, “Even though ALK-POSITIVE is stage IV and terminal, the disease is stable due to research developed only in the past few years with innovative but expensive medicines. This aggressive cancer finds a way to circumvent standard treatments and these rogue cancer cells forge a pathway allowing the disease to progress. This clinical trial proactively administers a vaccine that is designed to teach my body how to shut the door to these mutation pathways.”

The hope of this research is to make this disease chronic, livable and maybe even curative. Whatever the outcome, Steiner is highly motivated to be a pioneer in this research stating, “Thanks to this opportunity, I am advancing science that is transforming the future for ALK-POSITIVE patients and is a small step towards curing cancer.” He added, “Anyone who has lungs can get lung cancer! Go research!”
