Cheers to International Beer Day! Our resident royal, King Gambrinus, is always celebrating. 🍻

This zinc sculpture of the so-called patron saint of beer was made by Joseph A. Stoll in 1879 in Brooklyn, New York. It originally stood above a door at the John Frederick Wiessner and Sons brewery in Baltimore, and is the earliest surviving zinc sculpture of this popular icon of the brewing industry in the United States.

Visit the Maryland Center for History and Culture to raise a glass to Gambrinus and learn more about the history of the J. F. Wiessner & Sons brewery, first opened in 1863 on North Gay Street in Baltimore.

Renew your spirit of exploration.

Baltimore is a vibrant community that honors the past while keeping a keen eye on the future. Our city is where you can see the largest public collection of Matisse in the world (for free!), sip a craft beer in a converted church and stay in a four-star hotel poised atop an historic recreation pier. But the Charm City experience is about more than exploring neighborhoods and cultural sites. To really get a feel for this place, you have to meet the artists, provocateurs and visionaries who call Baltimore home. Come see what we’re all about and plan your visit today.
