This town isn’t being restored. And it isn’t being allowed to fall down either. 🌍
Bodie, California. 8,375 feet up in the Sierra Nevada. Once home to up to 10,000 people and 65 saloons.
California made it a state park in 1962 under a policy called arrested decay. They patch roofs. They shore up walls. They fix nothing.
Around 110 buildings remain — furniture still on the floors, goods still on the shelves.
Not restored. Not abandoned. Held.

You leave a country that’s 61 years old. You land in a city that’s been a capital for 870. ✈️

Singapore became independent in 1965. No oil, no farmland, almost no fresh water. So it made more of itself — literally. Parts of Changi Airport sit on ground that didn’t exist.

Beijing has been settled for over 3,000 years. And a line runs through the old city — 7.8km, laid out in the 13th century under Kublai Khan. The Forbidden City sits on it. Tiananmen sits on it. UNESCO listed it in 2024.

One city built itself outward. The other has been organised around the same line for eight centuries.

Fifty years ago, three people lived where this flight lands.

Air Canada Rouge Flight 1810 on an Airbus A321 — departing Toronto Pearson at 6:47 AM Wednesday, running south over the eastern United States, across the Gulf, and onto the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula. Landing Cancún at 9:39 AM. 1,766 miles. 3 hours 31 minutes in the air. Cruising at 34,000 feet.

Cancún wasn’t a town that grew. It was a decision.

In 1969 Mexico’s central bank set out to build a resort from nothing. They sent a team of 46 people — bankers, architects, engineers, economists — flying around the country on the bank’s own currency delivery planes. Two years. Hundreds of sites. They tested beach quality, water clarity, and distance to American cities. They simulated hurricanes in a laboratory.

Asked why the government was doing any of it, the man leading the project gave a one-word answer: “Money.”

They chose an empty sandbar on the Caribbean coast. The island that’s now the hotel strip had three residents — caretakers of a coconut plantation. No bridge to the mainland. No airport. Quintana Roo wasn’t even a state yet.

The first hotel opened in 1974. Today around 900,000 people live there.

To connect between two flights at this airport, you have to leave it. ✈️

Perth’s four terminals sit in two groups on opposite sides of the airfield — about five miles of road between them. No walkway. No train. No connection inside the airport at all.

Land international at Terminal 1 with an onward flight from Terminal 3 and you clear immigration, collect your bags, walk out, get on a bus, and check in all over again.

Cloud Gate is made of 168 stainless steel plates welded together and polished until every seam disappeared. It weighs 110 tons, was inspired by a drop of liquid mercury, and was dedicated in 2006. Anish Kapoor initially disliked the nickname Chicagoans gave it. He uses it himself now.
