Who was “Father Gatch” and why does his legacy still matter in Clermont County?
Born in 1751, Philip Gatch defied expectations early in life, leaving the Church of England to become a Methodist minister despite strong opposition. His faith came at a cost. He was attacked, tarred, and permanently injured for his beliefs, yet he continued his work with unwavering conviction.
Gatch’s journey eventually brought him to Clermont County, where he built a life rooted in both faith and principle. He freed his enslaved people, left the South behind, and became a strong voice against slavery at Ohio’s first Constitutional Convention.
But his impact did not stop there. As a judge and community leader, “Father Gatch” became known for his balance of justice and compassion, guiding a growing frontier community with both strength and empathy.
