Ruth's Roots

Ruth's Roots Ruth's Roots is a community garden that can serve the community’s youth through enrichment and is located at 130 Court St in Bay St Louis, Mississippi.

Ruth's Roots is a community garden that began as a project of the Hancock County Juvenile Drug Court. The garden exposes local youth and community members to agriculture and nature while offering plenty of space for personal growth and expression. Seasonally, we plant vegetables, fruits, and herbs. We have chickens, rabbits, worms, and honeybees. We donate most of our eggs to another local nonprof

it. Our honey is available for a donation. In the garden, you will also find a free little library and a blessings box. Please feel free to grab a book, sit under a tree, and read for awhile. Our Blessings Box operates under the motto: Take what you need. Leave what you can. We have had visitors from all over the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, Mexico, and the Bahamas (those are only the visitors we know about!). Help us spread the word about Ruth's Roots, our little garden by the Bay. Ruth's Roots is a 501(c)(3) and is 100% funded by private donations and grants. If you would like to donate to our community garden, please make checks payable to the Hancock Community Development Foundation with "Ruth's Roots" in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce at 100 S. Beach Blvd, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520. Ruth's Roots would not be possible without the donation of the land by Mr. Jim Thompson. We are so grateful for his generosity. Visit Ruth's Roots at 130 Court Street, Bay St. Louis, MS 39520 and make sure to grab a brochure. Don't forget to check in, take pictures, and tag us! Good afternoon! It’s planting season and we greatly appreciate the folks that are donating seeds and plants to us. We are getting everything planted. 💗. Please do not plant any plants in the back raised beds. We already have things going in them. A Lilly bed is going in the yellow bed in the back and we can’t wait to see them. Because it wasn’t for food consumption, poisons were used on ants that we would not use in our food beds. Thanks for understanding and if you have any questions, please message us. We appreciate our helpers!

Good afternoon! We are trying to get everything ready for spring. One of our volunteers is planting a lily bed in memory of a beautiful young woman that passed too soon. If you have any lillies or bulbs you would mind donating we would love them! She would like a beautiful variety of plants. Also, if you have extra plant or herb starters, we would appreciate those as well.

Someone dropped off some tomato plants and maybe banana plants? Thank you! If you dropped them off can you let me know for sure what they are? We will get them planted.

I also got a huge donation of seeds. I am working on getting them separated. They are mostly vegetables and herbs, but I have some flowers and fruits as well. If you or your school/organization are looking for anything in particular, please let me know and I will bag them up for you.

Another great treat we could use is sod squares. If you get your yard sodded and have extra leftover, the chickens love them! They can scratch away and enjoy the grass. Thank you to the community for making the garden great! 💗

I know many of our followers are from the Coast, but for those of y’all from out of State, things are crazy here!!! It has snowed non-stop since about 5:00 a.m. and it is accumulating like crazy. For reference, Ruth’s Roots is about 1,000 yards from the beach. We trudged through the snow today (uphill both ways 😂) to feed the animals and check on everything. We had to carry a five gallon bucket of water for the animals because we shut the water off at the garden to avoid a busted pipe. The rabbits were frisky and happy. The chickens eye rolled us bad though. Everyone is healthy and got lots of treats and love. I’ve attached some photos and I’ll put videos in the comments. Enjoy the snow!! ❄️❄️❄️

I went to the garden later than usual, but no worries, Dewey was waiting for me! Dewey is a sweet orange and white cat that visits the garden regularly. He eats his snacks and then lays and watches the rabbits eat. While I was there one of the walking tours came through the garden and started talking about Dewey! Apparently he follows many of the tours and gets free info on the city. Dewey needs a statue somewhere, IJS.

Do y’all remember Derick Hall? He started volunteering at Ruth’s Roots when he was at Gulfport High. After graduation he headed to Auburn University where he played football and continued to volunteer for the garden during the summers and holidays. Now he’s an outside linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks and still fills the blessings box.

Well guess what? He’s been chosen for the pro bowl, but he needs our votes! Please vote early and often and let’s repay Derick by sending him to Orlando!

I hope everyone enjoyed the Witch’s Walk and got to visit the vendors at the garden. Those witches did a great job decorating!

Speaking of decorating, Kerry Maloney and crew are decorating the garden again! But we need your help! If you have any extra Christmas decorations or lights or are willing to buy us some, we would greatly appreciate it! (There is a really cool countdown to Christmas sign at Sam’s that I couldn’t fit in my car, but if anyone else can….💗). We also need help decorating. November 16 is our decorating day. So many kids and families love to see the garden decorated. Please come help! Message us with any donations and we can provide drop off locations or can pick them up if they are close. We could also use Lowe’s or Walmart gift cards to help us purchase what we need. Thank you! 💗

Happy Sunday afternoon! Thankfully we were spared the full wrath of Hurricane Francine. The blessings box has been running super low, so I would greatly appreciate y’all donating. It is an awesome way to serve the most vulnerable of our community. I just left from feeding the animals and I’m about to tackle those beds so we can get fall seedling in. While I was there I crammed every free little library with books, cookbooks, games, a kindle, pokeman cards, needlepoint, Knick knacks and more!! Someone had left an entire tray of homemade cookies and they smelled amazing, so if you need a sweet (and who doesn’t) stop by! Thank you for supporting the garden!
