Heads up for parents and pet owners..the ticks are out already, and there are some super small ones.

Actual size was about a millimeter.

We found this guy on our 10 month old baby tonight. We're pretty avid outdoors people, and it might be the smallest tick I've ever seen. Have fun hunting for ticks!

Today students from my Environmental Science course took a trip to the Forest Exploration Center to work on their tree identification skills.

LEAF Wisconsin K-12 Forestry Education has great resources for educators, including a fantastic dichotomous key my students used to identify Sugar Maple vs Red Maple, White Oak vs Swamp Oak, and Beech vs Elm.

Black walnut trees drop hundreds of potential nuts every summer and early fall, most of which get chewed up by squirrels or lawnmowers before they ever ripen.

Italians have been gathering up early walnuts every summer for hundreds of years and turning them into nocino, a delicious aged liqueur traditionally enjoyed at Christmas time!

There's still time to make your own batch, but you have to hurry to beat the squirrels! I'll share a classic recipe from the 1800s with you if you reply in the comments.

A pet tortoise went missing in our neighborhood on Monday. If you've ever lost a pet, you know how lonely and hopeless of a feeling it can be.

But he's FOUND!! He was hiding out in the weeds by the pond across the street from his house, catching up with some long lost cousins, no doubt.

It pays to embrace wild Milwaukee, you never know when it might save the day!
