Apostle Island Ice Caves Are Officially Open!! Please Visit Responsibly

The mainland ice caves at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are opening. This is a rare and magical moment. If you’re heading out, please plan ahead and tread lightly(literally.)

| Parking |

-No parking at Meyers Beach or Hwy 13
-Must use off-site parking lots + shuttles
-Expect crowds and delays

| Planning |

-Start early, conditions can change daily
-No services on the lake (no water, bathrooms, or shelters)
-Check the Ice Line and the weather before you go

| Ice Safety |

-2–6 mile round trip on Lake Superior ice. This adventure is rated difficult
-Watch for cracks, water on ice, and sudden closures
-If it feels unsafe, turn around. Your photo is not worth it.

| Be Prepared |

-Ice cleats + trekking poles (I will have some gear for rent in the cornucopia beach parking lot)
-Warm, windproof and waterproof layers
-Food, water, emergency layers

| Leave No Trace |

Pack out ALL trash
Don’t break or climb ice formations
Respect closures and local communities

This place is fragile and deeply loved.
Please explore gently and leave it better than you found it
