To those who don't personally know anyone lost in service to country, what does Memorial Day ask of us?

We can read what has been written by those who have attempted to capture the sorrow of the families and friends of those lost. But the words of even the best writers can only scratch the surface.

Perhaps the closest those of us without a personal loss have to understanding what today represents is through the voices of those who live through loss.

Northern Lights Adventures crew has been fortunate to have many Veterans aboard who have shared with us glimpses into their service and the lives of those they've served with. Occasionally, we have had the honor to hear stories of those they've lost.

Memorial Day gives us a chance to return to those conversations. Even if we cannot fully appreciate the gravity of the day, these memories have given us many perspectives to consider. In doing so, we reflect on bravery, innocence, freedom, war, love, loss, and the people this day was made to remember.
