Dakota View Cabin on Lake Traverse

Dakota View Cabin on Lake Traverse Open year-round & offering all the comforts of home, you'll love staying here! We also have a washer and dryer to accommodate guests. Hope to see you soon!

"Dakota View" is a cute, clean & comfy 4 BR/2 BA vacation rental property (sleeping 9) located just feet from the shores of walleye-abundant Lake Traverse in western Minnesota. Welcome to our year-round cabin, “Dakota View”, on the Minnesota side of Lake Traverse. The name says it all as the cabin features beautiful, scenic views of the South Dakota hills and islands across the lake. Built in 2003

, our single-story cabin sits on a flat, 75’ wide lot, on a dead-end road, literally just steps from the lake. With over 1,800 square feet, there are four bedrooms and it sleeps up to ten people (two king beds, four twin beds and two pullout single sleeper sofa beds)

There are two bathrooms in the cabin – one with a full tub/shower combo and the other with a shower. The fully-equipped, well-appointed kitchen has all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher and microwave. The spacious dining room table seats eight people – the perfect place to eat all those fish you catch! There is seating for two more at the kitchen island. Our favorite part of the cabin is the lakeside living room. It has five huge picture windows, making for breathtaking, panoramic lake views. We have Dish TV and free Wi-Fi so our guests will be able to stay connected during their stay. Outside the cabin, there’s a Weber gas grill and lakeside fire pit to enjoy after a fun day on the lake. Guests have full use of our dock and boat lift, plus a swimming raft, stand up paddleboards and all the other lake toys we have in the garage like inner tubes, noodles and lifejackets (all available from approximately late April to late September). Please note that the paddle boat you see in the photos was destroyed in a storm in the summer of 2020 so unfortunately we no longer offer that amenity to guests. Sorry for the inconvenience! We do NOT allow pets but exceptions may be made for hunters who want to bring their hunting dogs, keeping them kenneled in the garage. Lake Traverse is highly regarded as one of the top walleye lakes in the state. It also has nice numbers of other species for a high quality fishing experience. Because it’s a "Border Water", with the Minnesota/South Dakota state line running right down the middle of the lake, Lake Traverse has special perks that most all other Minnesota lakes don't have:

* The fishing season remains OPEN here all year long! Catch walleyes whenever you please and get an early jump on the open water fishing season (no having to wait for the regular Minnesota fishing opener on the second weekend of May)
* Lake Traverse also follows South Dakota's regulation that allows you to fish TWO lines at the same time legally. Our cabin is conveniently located just a few lots down from one of the lake’s public accesses, which is especially nice for ice fishing or snowmobiling in the winter. Dakota View is located about 10 miles north Browns Valley, MN, 13 miles southwest from Wheaton, MN and 25 miles east of Sisseton, SD. Lake Traverse is just a few miles north of Big Stone Lake, another popular destination in western Minnesota. In terms of bigger cities, it's about:
* 3.25 hours from Minneapolis, MN
* 1.5 hours from Fargo, ND
* 2.5 hours from Sioux Falls, SD

We’re sure you’ll love it as much as we do.

Email from Chris Domeier,

Ortonville Area Fisheries Supervisor

In February of 2016 a single seine pull on Big Stone lake resulted in two “snow bunkers” filled with freshwater drum. It was an estimated 12,000 drum from one small area of the lake. In 2010 and again in 2014, commercial fishermen harvested an estimated 14,000 drum from Traverse Lake, which would be similar to the Big Stone pictures. So, considering last week’s Lake Traverse fish die-off, the estimated 2,000-3,000 dead drum were probably a relatively small portion of the overall population. Fish die-offs often appear much more dramatic than they really are when considered in terms of the entire population. The same is likely true for the other species of fish, including the walleyes. The number of walleyes that are known to have died are less than what anglers harvest in one good day of fishing on the lake. So, if the number of dead fish that were readily observed is accurate, I expect to see continued good walleye fishing out there again this year because the number that died was relatively small, plus a lot of walleyes avoided being harvested this winter due to the short ice-fishing season.

No matter where you fish, you may have a bad day of catching fish, but you’d better get your perspective straightened out if you have a bad day of fishing! Sincerely, Chris

You may have heard about the recent fish die-off on Lake Traverse where thousands of fish, (mostly sheephead but also smaller numbers of bluegills, crappie, and even smaller numbers of walleye and smallmouth bass) were discovered dead along the shoreline from Rainbow island to Dumont Bay (just south of the Halls Landing access).

Today the DNR said that the cause of this die off was something called “Gas Supersaturation Trauma”. Fortunately they feel that is won’t have a significant effect on the walleye fishing this year!

The screenshots offer further insight, in case you missed any of this.

Our Story

Welcome to our year-round cabin, “Dakota View”, on the Minnesota side of Lake Traverse. The name says it all as the cabin faces NW for beautiful, scenic views of the South Dakota hills and islands across the lake. If you're looking for a lake get-away to a clean, cute and comfortable cabin, then this is the place for you! Our cabin is very versatile and a great place for: * Vacationing families of all ages * Groups of fishermen or hunters * Ladies who want to have a “Girls' Getaway Weekend” * Family reunions or get-togethers * Out-of-towners who need lodging for local weddings, class reunions, graduation/birthday parties or holiday gatherings THE CABIN: Built in 2003, our single-story cabin sits on a flat, 75’ wide lot, on a dead-end road, literally just steps from the lake. With over 1,800 square feet, there are four bedrooms and it sleeps up to nine people. * The largest bedroom has a king-size bed and French doors that open out to the lake and patio area. There's plenty of space for a crib in this room if you have a small child. * The second bedroom also has a king-size bed. * The third and fourth bedrooms each have two twin beds. * There is also a twin hide-a-bed in the living room. Since we know how important it is to have a good night’s sleep, especially when you’re on vacation, all of our bedroom mattresses are brand-name and high quality. We also only use 300 thread-count linens. There are two bathrooms in the cabin – one with a full tub/shower combo and the other with a shower. We also have a washer and dryer to accommodate guests. The fully-equipped, well-appointed kitchen has all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher and microwave. All of the appliances are stainless steel. The spacious dining room table seats eight people – the perfect place to eat all those fish you catch! Our favorite part of the cabin is the lakeside living room. It has five huge picture windows, making for amazing, panoramic lake views. New for 2014, we just added Wi-Fi and a landline phone so our guests will be able to stay connected during their stay. Outside the cabin, there’s a gas grill and lakeside fire pit to enjoy after a fun day on the lake. We also have a dock and boat lift for your use (from approximately late April to mid September). Guests will also be able to enjoy the brand-new swimming raft and paddle boat that we just put into the water earlier in April. No boat? No problem! The nearby Wheaton Service Center offers pontoon rentals as well as guided fishing trips and pontoon cruises on Lake Traverse. In the winter months they also rent fish houses for ice fishing. For more info, go to: www.wheatonservice.com. We do allow pets on the property, BUT they MUST stay outdoors or kenneled in the garage. THE LAKE: Lake Traverse is quite possibly one of the best walleye lakes in the state. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the 2012 survey of the lake averaged 42 walleyes per gill net lift (normal range for this class of lake is 3.2-15.3). You fisherman will appreciate what an incredible number that is! Lake Traverse is the 12th largest lake in the state, with over 11,500 acres. The lake also has nice numbers of other species for a high quality fishing experience. Because it’s a 'Border Lake' (the Minnesota/South Dakota state line runs right down the middle of the lake), the fishing season opened here on April 19th (April 18th in 2015), a full three weeks before the regular Minnesota fishing opener, so you can get a jump on the fishing season. Lake Traverse also follows South Dakota's regulation that allows you to fish two lines legally. Our cabin is conveniently located just a few lots down from one of the lake’s public accesses, which is especially nice for ice fishing or snowmobiling in the winter. In addition to fishing, there is plentiful public hunting land nearby, with dozens of Waterfowl Production Areas and Wildlife Management Areas within a 10-30 minute drive. Wildlife such as deer, pheasants, ducks, geese, and turkeys are abundant in the area. THE AREA: Dakota View is located away about 10 miles from Browns Valley and 13 miles from Wheaton. Lake Traverse is just a few miles north of Big Stone Lake, another popular destination in western Minnesota. In terms of bigger cities, it's about: * 3.5 hours from Minneapolis, MN * 1.5 hours from Fargo, ND * 2.5 hours from Sioux Falls, SD Although we're located in a small-town/rural setting, all the basic amenities you need can be found nearby: grocery and hardware stores, restaurants (sit-down and fast food), convenience stores, bait shops, a movie theatre, a public outdoor heated swimming pool, a bowling alley, a public nine-hole golf course - all without the craziness that’s typical of the bigger tourist areas. That’s one of the reasons we love it out here so much; it’s peaceful and low-key. We only rent our cabin to those who are responsible, courteous and will leave it in the condition that they found it in. A lot of hard work has gone into our cabin and we ask that guests respect it by treating it as if it were their own home. Thank you for understanding. For further details please go to our website, www.VRBO.com/453168 and click on the 'Get An Instant Quote' button to get pricing on dates that are still available. To book a stay or ask questions about Dakota View, please fill in your information (be sure to include name, phone, e-mail address and a brief message to us - incomplete inquiries cannot be replied to) and send a request to us. We invite you to stay at Dakota View on scenic Lake Traverse. We’re sure you’ll love it as much as we do. Hope to see you soon!
