Part three and the final thoughts on the South Carolina and Georgia trip with my mom found us at Tybee Island Beach. This part of the vacation was for pure relaxation. To get to the island you drive on a two lane road over marshes and finally the island. It’s only about 20-25 minutes from Savannah. The beaches are clean, the food is good, and the sunsets and sunrises are magical.

I’m so happy mom and I took this trip together. And now it’s time to start planning the next getaway!

Welcome to part two of my recent trip with my mom. Some background first…in March 2020, we were traveling in this same area to trace some of my mom’s ancestry. Dad had spent quite some time researching and found that on my mom’s, mother’s side of the family could be traced back to Thomas Lynch who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He owned land and a house just outside of Georgetown, South Carolina. Well, the shut down of travel during that time also meant this historical site was also closed. Fast forward just over six years later and mom was ready to make the trip again.

Hopsewee Plantation is the site of the Lynch family. Today, the family who owns the land has the historic house open for tours and now there is an added tearoom on property.

I’m so glad we could finally finish the trip from six years ago and my mom could learn a little bit more about her ancestors.

My mom and I are back home from a week long vacation to South Carolina and Georgia. This was a trip that we planned in order to finish a trip we started in March 2020 when travel was shut down due to Covid. To start, we flew to Charleston and spent a couple of nights in Mt. Pleasant. It was a charming suburb of Charleston, SC. From there we visited Ft. Sumter and Boone Plantation and Gardens.

Ft. Sumter was the location of the first shots in the Civil War. There is still shrapnel imbedded in the walls of the original structure. The most impressive part of this visit were the National Parks employees. The retelling of history while paying honor to the lost lives and acknowledging the reasons for the war as lessons to be learned and applied struck a cord to both me and my mom that would set the tone of this vacation.

We also visited Boone Plantation and Gardens with the Avenue of Oaks entryway that led to more history and lessons learned on the impact of plantations and slavery. Again, it was a time to apply lessons of the past to make a better future.

I’ll share more over this week of our trip. Let me know what you would like to know more about of our visits to these two locations in the Charleston area.

It’s June 1st so it’s the time of the month for me to reflect on my chosen word of the year - cultivate. This month I want to cultivate my calendar and my tasks list in order to finish some projects and activities. Here are some things I am thinking about:
☑️ organize the garage
☑️ donate some unused items or clothing
☑️ make decisions on my travel for the rest of the year
☑️ catch up on professional development
☑️ schedule that dinner and time with friends
☑️ hang out with the nieces and do what they want to do
☑️ take some me time and escape for a weekend

What are you doing to cultivate your lists of things this month?

As I am thinking about travel plans and things to do, this idea popped up in my wonderings. What are your thoughts on this…

The perfect itinerary usually isn’t the one jam packed from sun up to sun down.
The best trips leave room for:
✔ wandering
✔ rest
✔ unexpected moments
✔ one extra dessert stop

I can spend just as much time helping clients avoid burnout as I do helping them choose destinations.

Vacation should feel like freedom, not a checklist.

Travel Tip Tuesday

This one is more personal today. I’ve been helping plan a family’s first Alaska cruise with pre-teens. They are getting ready for an unforgettable adventure filled with glaciers, wildlife, and memories they will talk about for years!

An Alaska cruise is the perfect mix of relaxation for parents and nonstop discovery for curious pre-teens. A little preparation goes a long way in making the trip smooth and stress-free. Here are some tips we have passed back and forth.
✔️ Dress in layers — Alaska weather can change quickly
✔️ Pack binoculars for whale watching and glacier spotting
✔️ Download movies, games, and music before boarding
✔️ Bring journals so everyone in the family can document what they see and reflect on in their own words
✔️ Don’t skip the excursions — dog sledding, wildlife tours, and scenic railways are unforgettable experiences

Most importantly, unplug when you can and enjoy the quality family time together. Alaska has a way of bringing everyone closer.
