Bedford has been named a top town to visit by Smithsonian Magazine, and was recognized as a Top Adventure Town by Blue Ridge Outdoors in 2020. We're home to the Peaks of Otter, National D-Day Memorial, Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, and Smith Mountain Lake. Not to mention wineries, breweries, artisan studios, biking and hiking trails, disc golf, farms, orchards, and locally owned shops and rest
aurants! The Welcome Center opened in 2004 and sees an average of 60,000 visitors each year from all over the world. It is comprised of exhibit and display space in addition to the offices of the Bedford County Tourism Department, also known as Destination Bedford. Exhibits within the Welcome Center showcase the area’s many attractions and amenities. There is a gift store featuring unique and local items, a firefighter gallery with restored 1927 Seagrave fire truck, small theater, and free Wi-Fi. A community room provides meeting space on a rental basis. Exterior features include covered porches, hand-painted rocking chairs featuring Virginia-themed artwork, a picnic area, and a LOVE sign, which is a great photo opportunity for anyone visiting or living in Bedford! The building is fully accessible and there is parking for motor coaches and campers. There is also an electric car charging station. Each year, the Welcome Center hosts the Festival of Trees, November-January. The event also features a scavenger hunt for children and special activities during some evenings in December. It has become an annual holiday tradition for many in the community.
