Our final evening was spent at Marina Bay Restaurant in Barcelona where we had a mixed salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, chicken paella, a traditional dish of Spain, and their version of Black Forest Cake. After returning to the hotel for the evening, most of our group chose to go to the beach less than 10 minutes walk from our hotel. On Thursday morning, we were up early for breakfast at the hotel and at the airport to get ready for our flight. We also had to say “arrivaderci” to our tour director Eugenio. He did a great job taking us around and explaining much of the history and traditions of each area.

Early this morning, we headed into Barcelona again, this time to see the view of the city from Montjuic. Atop this hill is where the Olympic Stadium was built for the 1992 Summer Games. Then we had lunch back along Las Ramblas in the downtown. Most of the group chose an American style meal. We then departed for Montserrat, a monastery that houses the Virgin of Montserrat, “La Moreneta.” We saw the Basilica, the virgin statue and some kids hiked the trail up the mountain while others rode the zip rail.

On Tuesday afternoon, we also visited the site of La Basilica De La Sagrada Familia. Antoni Gaudi was also the architect for this project which started in 1882. Gaudi died in 1926. It is the longest running building project in history, taking longer to build than the Great Pyramids or the Great Wall of China. Each side of the basilica has a different facade. We focused specifically on the Nativity Facade and the Passion Facade which focus on Christ’s birth and death.

On Tuesday morning, we visited Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare of businesses and shop through Barcelona. Next, we took a guided tour of Park Guell, designed by Antoni Gaudi and funded by the Guell family. Gaudi’s architecture closely follows nature to excell in functionality and limit cost. This park brings millions of visitors each year and helps fund the city.
