🎼 Why Do We Study Classical Music?

At Arts Development School of Music, we believe studying classical music is about much more than learning old pieces or memorizing notes.

Classical music gives students a foundation. It teaches us how to listen closely, understand musical structure, develop technique, interpret emotion, and communicate through sound.

🎹 It teaches patience when a passage doesn’t come easily.
🎵 It teaches discipline through consistent practice.
👂 It teaches us to listen—to ourselves, to others, and to the music.
🧠 It challenges us to understand patterns, harmony, rhythm, and form.
❤️ And it gives us a language for expressing something that words sometimes can’t.

But perhaps most importantly, studying classical music doesn’t mean you’re limited to classical music.

The skills developed at the piano, through a Bach invention, a Mozart sonata, or a Chopin piece can travel with you into jazz, pop, film music, songwriting, improvisation, and whatever musical path you choose.

Classical music isn’t about living in the past.

It’s about building a foundation for where your music can go next. 🌱🎶

So whether you’re just beginning your musical journey or continuing one you’ve had for years, there’s always something new to discover.

Listen. Learn. Create. Soar. 🐦🎵

Before we scroll past another beautiful piano performance… let’s talk about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart! 🎼

Mozart is one of the most influential composers in Western classical music, and his relationship with the piano helped shape the instrument’s place in the concert world.

🎹 Mozart was a piano virtuoso. As a child, he became known for his extraordinary keyboard abilities and performed throughout Europe.

🎶 He composed hundreds of works across many genres—including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, operas, and solo piano music.

✨ He helped elevate the piano concerto. Mozart wrote more than 20 piano concertos, helping establish the piano concerto as one of the major forms of classical music.

👀 He was composing from an incredibly young age. Mozart began writing music as a child, and his early talent became one of the most remarkable stories in music history.

🎼 And here’s something we love about Mozart at ADSM: his music reminds us that technical skill and creativity can live together. The notes on the page are only the beginning—the musician brings the music to life.

From the practice room to the recital stage, every student has their own musical story to tell. 💜

What’s your favorite Mozart piece? 🎹 Tell us in the comments!

🐦✨ See What Ar-De Saw…

Ar-De was there for the whole performance… and there was so much to be proud of! 🎶

From the very beginning, Ar-De noticed her eagerness to play. You could see how ready she was to share the music she had been practicing.

And one moment especially caught Ar-De’s attention…

As she approached the end of her piece, she slowed down and let the music breathe. 🎵 That little moment showed just how much she is growing—not only as a musician, but in her ability to listen, feel, and express.

Her instructor, Ilene Mendoza, taught her well. 💜

And then… she bowed. 🥹✨

What a beautiful way to close her performance!

To our wonderful student: thank you for gracing us with your presence and sharing the music you’ve worked so hard to practice. We see your progress, and we are so proud to be part of your journey.

You first shared your music with us at our Bellflower location, and now we’re so excited to see you bringing that same joy and dedication to our growing Torrance community.

And to her family—thank you for choosing Arts Development School of Music and allowing us to be part of her musical journey. We hope you feel proud every time you see her step up to perform. 💜

Thank you for sharing your music with us.

We see your progress. Keep playing. Keep growing. Keep soaring. 🐦✨

What does ADSM mean?

It stands for Arts Development School of Music.

But the name represents more than four letters. It represents a community built around the belief that music is something we develop—through curiosity, practice, patience, creativity, and connection.

Since 1994, we’ve been creating space for students to learn, grow, and discover their own musical voice.

ADSM — where music becomes part of who you are. 🎶

Maybe they’re always asking to play the piano.
Maybe they stop when they hear music.
Maybe they want to know how an instrument works.
Maybe they’re constantly tapping rhythms on the table.
Maybe they simply said, “I want to learn.”

Those little moments of curiosity can be the beginning of something much bigger.

They don’t have to know how to read music.
They don’t have to know how to play.
They don’t have to be “naturally talented.”
And they certainly don’t have to have everything figured out.

That’s what lessons are for.

At Arts Development School of Music, we meet students where they are and help them build from there—developing musical skills, confidence, patience, listening, creativity, and the ability to keep learning.

Because readiness doesn’t always look like sitting perfectly at the piano for 30 minutes.

Sometimes, readiness looks like asking a question.

And sometimes, that one question becomes the first note of a lifelong relationship with music. 🎶🪽

If they’re curious, they’re ready.

This is what it looks like when a student grows into a performer. ✨

Pauline’s performance of “The Winner Takes It All” by ABBA was such a beautiful example of what happens when talent is nurtured over time.

She didn’t simply sing the song—she commanded the stage. She understood how to read the room, invite the audience into the music, build and release energy, and keep the performance moving even when unexpected moments arose.

That kind of presence doesn’t happen overnight. It’s developed through years of learning, practice, guidance, and trust between student and instructor.

Pauline’s performance was a wonderful reflection of the work her instructor has poured into her development—and a reminder of what music education can cultivate when a student is given the space and support to grow.

We were incredibly proud to witness her step into that stage with such confidence.

And honestly? It felt only right that Pauline closed out the evening. 🎶

🎸 From practice to performance.

Every note tells a story of patience, persistence, and progress.

We’re so proud to watch our students find their sound—and share it with the world. ❤️

This is what it means to soar. 🪽🎶

Ar-De meets Vio at Arts Development School of Music and learns the value of patience.

In music, we need patience because learning isn’t about getting everything right the first time. It’s about listening, trying again, slowing down, and trusting that small steps eventually become something beautiful.

You don’t have to rush the music. Let yourself grow into it. 🪽🎶
