It all begins with making a good forecast. We take a systematic and organized approach to producing our daily weather forecasts, a product that culminates in the selection of a target area (i.e., the location that we anticipate will experience the emergence of conditions most favorable for severe weather). Then we drive without hesitation into the center of our target area, using state-of-the-art wireless technology to download weather data on the go. This allows us to constantly refine and shrink our target area. As our chase team approaches the target area, we scan the skies looking for visual clues that either corroborate the digital data or suggest that a shift in strategy is needed. Often times, we are able to identify physical processes and features that the relatively coarse observational data cannot resolve. Once a storm has been targeted, we are highly skilled at positioning ourselves so that we obtain the best possible lighting and visibility of the storm and its elements.
