THROWBACK THURSDAY

MEXICO 🇲🇽☀️

I spent a few nights at this tented camp in Xpu Ha (near Tulum), and this was definitely not your typical Mexico resort stay. My “tent” had a king bed, air conditioning and its own tub on the deck. The property was tucked into the trees, incredibly peaceful, and just a short walk from the beach club and that gorgeous Caribbean water.

One day I hired a private driver with a loose itinerary: ruins, shopping and a cenote. At some point I basically told him to take me somewhere he would go.

That ended up being my favorite part.

He took me to a cenote he loved, became my unofficial photographer for the day, and we ended up having such a good time exploring. Sometimes having a plan is great. Sometimes giving a local permission to go off-script is even better.

A tent in the jungle, Caribbean beaches, ruins, a cenote and apparently a snake around my neck. 😂

ISLA HOLBOX 🇲🇽 ☀️

September is Fun in the Sun month, and there was really no question that Mexico would make an appearance. Maybe a lot of appearances 🤣

Have you heard of Isla Holbox? Pronounced “HOLE-bosh.”

Boutique hotels and that water are what initially caught my attention, but the more I learned about the island, the more I LOVE it.

The streets are mostly sand. Golf carts and bikes are common transportation. Whale sharks gather in the surrounding waters seasonally, and after dark, bioluminescent plankton can make the water glow when conditions are right.

🤯 MIND-BLOWN MONDAY

You can cruise to all seven continents.

The Caribbean and Mediterranean might be what first come to mind when someone says “cruise,” but ships can take you through Alaska, along the coast of Africa, deep into South America, across Asia and Australia…

All the way to Antarctica. 🐧

That’s one of the reasons I think cruising gets underestimated.

There isn’t really one “cruise vacation.”

There are 3-night weekends where the ship is the vacation.
Expedition ships carrying a couple hundred people into places most travelers will never see.
River ships pulling into the middle of European cities.
Mega-ships that feel like floating resorts.
Itineraries where you wake up somewhere new almost every morning.

Same basic concept.

Completely different vacations.

So I’m curious: if I handed you a cruise ticket tomorrow and you could choose anywhere in the world, where are you sailing? 🌎🚢

One very important question when planning a cruise from New Orleans:

How many meals can we fit in before embarkation?

Because sailing from New Orleans comes with a slight problem. You’re technically there to get on a cruise ship, yet there are entirely too many things you need to eat first.

A pre-cruise stay here can turn embarkation into only one part of the trip. Dinner the night before. Breakfast the next morning. Maybe one more stop because you absolutely cannot leave New Orleans without trying that place.

Judging by my camera roll, I’ve taken this responsibility very seriously. 😂

Things are starting to arrive for The Reconnect and I’m getting excited!

I’ve had this whole experience pictured in my head for months, so seeing the little details show up is when it starts feeling REAL.

One thing I’ve learned after cruising?

The ship matters. The itinerary matters. Who you’re traveling with matters.

The cruise I would choose for a girls trip isn’t necessarily the one I’d choose with my family. The ship I’d pick when I want amazing food and nightlife isn’t necessarily the one I’d choose when the destinations are the entire reason I’m going.

That’s probably why I never really have a blanket answer when someone asks me:

“What’s the best cruise line?”

There isn’t one.

There’s the one that fits how YOU want to vacation.
