The Center for Excellence in Learning through Service (CELTS) at Berea College educates students for leadership in service and social justice through promotion and coordination of academic service-learning and student-led community service. CELTS coordinates the following student-led programs:

CELTS also coordinates several community wide events focusing on hunger each year:

Adopt-A-Grandparent (AGP) officially began programming three weeks ago, and we want to take a moment to thank all of our wonderful volunteers for their time, support, and dedication! Thanks to you, we have already shared some fun and meaningful moments with our participants.

It’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and our community partner GreenHouse17 is giving us opportunities to show up for survivors. Here are a few ways to get involved!

Thursday, October 15 - Wear Purple!
This is a national day of wearing purple to identify yourself as an advocate for survivors. Put on your purple clothes to show support, raise awareness, and call for an end to domestic violence.
BEREANS: If you wear purple Thursday, drop a pic in the comments!

Chalk the Walk!
Write messages rooted in support, hope, and awareness on sidewalks around campus and in the community.
Add your chalk art photos in the comments too! Let’s fill Berea with care and visibility.

Jíbaro was originally used to negatively refer to or comment on the rural farmers of Puerto Rico, especially in the mountains. Now it has been reclaimed as a Puerto Rican identity that symbolizes hard work, connection to the land and cultural pride.

Music, poetry, and politics helped shape this transformation, while traditional jíbaro symbols like the pava hat became recognizable representations of Puerto Rican culture. Today, artists such as Bad Bunny continue to incorporate jíbaro imagery into contemporary fashion and popular culture, showing how this tradition continues to evolve while remaining connected to Puerto Rico’s history. ⭐🌴🌊

CELTS students were excited to welcome Berea College's Art in Action team during departmental meeting last week to spark their creativity for a programming-filled semester.

The different stations allowed students to enjoy an hour full of nature art, mud pie making, and crafts. Smiles everywhere! Our students had so much fun making their crafts and spending time with one another as they gear up for another week of service.
