ieved to be one of them. He had “Bargain Fair” similar to a flea market set up in one of the store fronts. A man looking a lot like Ned is sometimes seen shuffling up and down the street near the sight of his old store. People in the second-floor apartments over the stores have seen a lady in a long white dress standing by the Calvin B. Taylor Bank. And an old soldier – still in uniform has been seen walking near Pitt Street. Berlin has many haunted sites including the Old Dairy Queen, the Store of Crazy Characters, the former Odd Fellows Hall, the Maryland Wine Bar, the Pitts House and St. Paul’s Graveyard. Besides the spirits, Berlin also features a “healing tree” and a site known to be occupied by elementals.

Magic. ✨👻

Ned France spent a lifetime creating illusions, making people smile, and running one of Berlin's most unforgettable shops—Uncle Ned's Bargain Fair. Filled with everything from furniture and old tools to a human skeleton, a suit of armor, and even false teeth, it was unlike any store on the Eastern Shore.

Ned was also a magician, famous for entertaining children and even performing a Houdini-style escape while hanging upside down in chains from an awning across from the Atlantic Hotel. But years after his death, some believe his greatest trick wasn't escaping chains... It was never leaving Berlin.

A lifelong resident once described seeing a man in a light-colored suit slowly shuffling up Main Street at sunrise. She immediately recognized that unmistakable walk. It was Ned.

Later in life, after moving into assisted living, Ned often called the town office asking someone to come get him because he wanted to come home. Perhaps... he did.

During one of our Berlin Ghost Walks, a guest carried an EVP recorder. It stayed silent all evening until we stopped where Ned's store once stood. As I said, "Some people believe Ned France is still walking the streets of Berlin," the recorder suddenly answered:

"True."

Moments later, after telling the story about Ned following a customer whispering, "Good push brooms at Ned's," the recorder spoke one last time:

"That was fun."

Those were the only two words it captured all night. Coincidence... or one last magic trick from Uncle Ned? 👻 Join us in Berlin and decide for yourself.

Did you know... Wyatt Earp, Winston Churchill, and the first African American woman to become a physician in the U.S. all had something in common—they were members of the IOOF. And we have an IOOF lodge right here in America's Coolest Small Town of Berlin .... its history is fascinating!

The IOOF (International Order of Odd Fellows) started in England in the 1600s. Back then, many people couldn't afford a doctor or even a proper burial. Helping people wasn't the norm, so a group of people pooled their money and formed the IOOF. They embraced the name because they considered themselves a little "odd" for believing people should take care of one another.

Their mission was simple: visit the sick, educate the orphan, welcome the stranger, and bury the dead. Before long, Odd Fellows lodges began popping up all over the world—including right here on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Easton has one, and Berlin's Paran Hall, built in 1902, which is now home to the Mermaid Museum.

But here's where it gets interesting...

The Odd Fellows held private ceremonies that included chanting, symbolic rituals, and even a real human skeleton used during initiations. The skeleton wasn't meant to frighten people. It served as a reminder that life is short, death is inevitable, and there is a higher purpose for all, and from that day forward they would embrace the mission of the IOOF.

Still... with all those secret meetings, mysterious rituals, and powerful emotions filling those old lodge walls for generations, it's no surprise that some people believe the buildings still hold echoes of the past.

History... or haunting? You decide. 👻
