Today we visited the House of Memory, the Holocaust Museum, and the Ixchel Museum of textiles. It was a busy day linking the history of violence in Guatemala's civil war, the fight for social justice and the role weaving plays in telling Guatemala's tragic yet hopeful story.

Two more reasons to travel to Guatemala with MayaWorks:
* There aren't too many foreign vacation destinations you can do on
$210 per day. The Judaica Journey is affordable. It includes all accommodations, most meals, ground transportation, and bilingual guide.
* Life is too short not to drink good coffee! Let's face it: you've been drinking mediocre coffee for way too long. Guatemala's location in relation to the equator and its volcanic soil make it one of the best countries for coffee production. You'll look
forward to waking up in the morning just to get a cup of java. It's guaranteed you will
return home with several pounds of Guatemala's best beans.

A Great Reason to Travel to Guatemala with MayaWorks?

You can't remember the last time you met someone really
interesting. By far the real joy of traveling to Guatemala is interacting with its people. Over 60% of Guatemalans are indigenous, descendants of the Maya who speak one of 21 tribal languages and dress in traditional dress commonly known as traje. Indigenous Guatemalans still practice ancient rituals that date back to the first millennium while incorporating many Christian customs into their spiritual practice. In addition to their unique culture, Guatemalans are incredible people. They are the warmest, politest and friendliest people you will ever meet! And they don't mind our terrible Spanish! Meet the artisans who make our beautiful kippot, tallitot, mezzuzot, challah covers, and more!

"I’ve been with Mayaworks to Guatemala 6 or 7 times, and I’m trying to think of how I can limit the number of adjectives to describe the experience — so here’s just a few: (low-key) informative, enlightening, (higher-level) deeply moving, inspiring, sublime, spiritual. Meeting these great Maya women artisans face to face, and the dedication to their beautiful work (especially the kippot), and of course buying them…we know that it makes for better nutrition for the families and raises their self-image. How often, really, do we have an opportunity to see the power of our Tzedakah money make such a direct difference in the lives of others? Awesome!"

MayaWorks' artisan partners from San Marcos La Laguna and Santiago Atitlán enjoyed their second group therapy session about self-esteem and violence prevention. We are extremely grateful to partner with the Embajada de Canadá en Guatemala who is helping to finance our project to increase the economic opportunities and mental health of women artisans through increased product visibility, sales, and psychosocial support. In the coming days we will share more about this amazing project that is only possible because of the financial support of the Canadian government.

Visit our website www.mayaworks.org if you want to purchase our products or donate to our program.
