Fun multi focus family hike
Sam, Jeff, and Michelle took the afternoon off from snowboarding to explore waterfalls, discover the forest, and do some land navigation.
We did a bit of land navigation prep in the parking lot first, then set out. Water is up and has a green, blue hue with the mineral silt. We are still working with the spring white “monorail” on busy hiking trails. That’s why bushwhacking this time of year is super practical 😎.
We couldn’t get deep into the canyon with the water and ice, so we let Sam navigate a compass bearing from one trail to the other through the forest and around numerous obstacles. See his path in the photos…really good, no wandering, and a solid “boxing” maneuver. (I tracked with my watch).
On the return l, we stopped to enjoy the company of Maine’s state bird. I told our guests that BC Chickadees are very curious birds and “if we stay long enough and quiet they will check us out”. Almost on cue the chickadees started filling the trees on both sides of the trail. They were joined by some pine siskens high in the trees, and some gold finches zooming around. It’s hard to explain how cool it is to have so many chickadees surrounding you and calling in stereo.
On our way out we invited the family to join us on our check of the Gilead eagle nest. We could not confirm an eagle in the nest (it is deep) but there was an adult stationed on an over watch perch. That’s a good sign for an active nest😊.
April 1- was this the first of the spring tours or last of the winter tours? 🤔. Either way it was a great one.
