A vanished island. Generations of stories. A legacy that still lives on.

Just off the coast of Mississippi once stood the Isle of Caprice, a legendary resort island that rose from the waters of the Mississippi Sound and became a destination unlike anywhere else in the region. Visitors arrived by boat to enjoy dining, dancing, entertainment, and the excitement of an island getaway. During the era of Prohibition, the Isle of Caprice's location beyond certain legal boundaries helped make it one of the most talked-about destinations on the Gulf Coast. For a brief but unforgettable chapter in our history, the Isle of Caprice captured the imagination of thousands.

Today, the island itself is gone, reclaimed by the forces of nature. But its story lives on.

In this short-form story, Captain Louis Skrmetta and Susan Hunt share memories, family connections, and local history tied to the Isle of Caprice. Their families' connections to the island span generations, offering a rare look at one of Coastal Mississippi's most fascinating lost landmarks and helping preserve a piece of our region's heritage for future generations.

What drew so many people there? And why are people still talking about the Isle of Caprice nearly a century later?

Their stories reveal more than what once stood in the Sound. They highlight the people, families, and traditions that continue to shape Coastal Mississippi today.

A special thank you to Mary Mahoney's Old French House for welcoming us to film in such a historic setting, and to Bobby Mahoney for sharing his humor and hospitality throughout the day.

History doesn't always disappear when the land does.

Sometimes it lives on through the people who remember it.

Discover the story of an island that may have disappeared from the map, but never from the memory of Coastal Mississippi.

To help visualize this story, select archival photographs have been digitally enhanced and animated. Historical facts, locations, and accounts are based on available historical records and sources.

Some family traditions are passed around the dinner table.

Others are passed across a pottery wheel.

"The Gulf air moves through live oaks and, along the beach, past pastel storefronts and galleries filled with local art. After Hurricane Katrina, the town rebuilt as a creative community where painters, potters, and musicians found room to breathe.
