Throwback Thursday coming in! May today be a reminder not to take the little things for granted! We are surrounded by such wonder and beauty when on the water. The experience isn't always just catching fish. I talked about this moment on my trip today and how cool it was!

Almost a decade ago when I was working on the Silver Dollar 3 as a deckhand, we were given front row seats to how playful dolphins can be! These pleasures can easily be overlooked on trips, but end up being talked about for years to come! Here's to all the memories that will be made this season. May we fully appreciate ALL the moments!

This particular trip came to mind yesterday, and seemed like a good Throwback Thursday. This was about 15 years ago when Capt Ben was running a 1970's center console Mako for Capt Bill Mcdonnel. The crew were theatre performers in town for a residency show at the Beau Rivage, spoke some English, but were fluent in fishing! We caught a monster shark after releasing several, boxed a nice cobia, and released a couple shorties. It was a great day!

Finally with this weather and wind stabilizing, we will be getting back out on the water soon! Don't sleep on getting your trips booked, because dates are filling up, especially weekends through the summer. Very few of those dates left!

It's THROWBACK THURSDAY again!
We had a catch and release trip this
morning, and it had me thinking about some of my most memorable catch and release trips of the past.

This was from 2013 off an 18 center console. That day Captain Ben and his 2 buddies fought big fish all day on light tackle, sight casting redfish and black drum. They even caught a couple surprising red snapper north of the islands and let them all swim for another day.

It is memories like this that are worthy of Throwback Thursday. Yall don't sleep on coming and making some of your own with us at High Times Charters so you can look back on them 12 years from now too!

It's easy to take the little things for granted in life, but a good friend reminded me yesterday to not forget them. Small things like the sound of the ocean while sitting on anchor. It's the best office in the world.

With our season officially kicked off this week, it is time to bring back Throwback Thursday as well! Each Thursday through the season we will highlight some special fishing memories highlighting past catches, coastal history, or literal throwback catches!

This week's Throwback Thursday takes us back to the very first trip I ran on the High Times Too after taking over the business. It was a great trip and set the tone for what ended up being a phenomenal season! Looking forward to all of the memories we will make in 2025!

Throwback Thursday again, and it also happens to be this girl's birthday today. Alaina turns 19 today, and no better throwback than a great memory fishing with the family a few years ago! Those memories are what this is all about! Happy Birthday Alaina!

Another Throwback Thursday again and today another little gem I came across. This postcard was dated 1954 and shows a "a typical deep sea fishing catch on the Mississippi Coast at Biloxi." Whoever sent this seems to have had a good sense of humor as well as you can read. I have heard stories from the old timers about how the cobia used to be in the 50's and 60's. Of course that was with a lot less pressure and before the panhandle so built up as well. Just for thise wondering what the biomass used to be like, you can see there used to be alot more fish out there. It also looks like the guys were rocking some early versions of penn senators as well.

LOOK at all the PHOTOS to see crazy stuff!

Sneaking in Throwback Thursday late today after getting life put back together after that nuisance of a storm, and is definitely one for my biologist and fish nerd friends. So this picture takes it back to 2008 when I was fortunate enough to be a volunteer on the "Gordon Gunter", a 200+ ft research trawler, for a 2 week leg of a deepwater trawling survey.

There were many remarkable species surveyed from the depths caught in the trawls each day. Hatchetfish, anglerfish, a green-lantern shark, trumpetfish, an electric ray which I learned on that trip exist in the gulf, batfish, huge sharks ,and even a swordfish to name a few! Also saw a true sea monster in a stingray that weighed over 300lbs on the scale lifted by the crane. It really is remarkable what lives in the depths of our Gulf of Mexico, and 16 years later it is still one of the fondest memories and most unique experiences I have ever had. Thank you again to Mark Grace and Alonzo Hamilton for allowing me such a unique oppurtunity.

The days got away from me and I missed Throwback Thursday, but better late than never! So instead for Flashback Friday something that should be close to every locals heart.

It has been a right of passage for any school age child to take a field trip on the Biloxi Sh*****ng Tour for decades now. It is a unique expirience, a core memory for many locals, and many people's first exposure to the marine life we have in our Mississippi waters. What you may not know is this iconic vessel still in operation today has changed ownership a few times, but been in continuos operation since the late 50's/early 60's I believe.

There are many stories about this vessel, but perhaps my favorite is hearing how in it's early days they would cross paths on their daily trips with the "Hermit of Deer Island", John Guilot, as he would paddle out in his canoe. They would drop him supplies while John would entertain the guests with a brief story.

Below is a postcard I came across picturing the Sailfish in it's earlier days. Postmarked 1970, it strikes me how rich our local history and marine heritage is here in Biloxi. My boat is docked right across from the Sailfish, and I see it still running trips daily throughout the season. How many tens or even hundreds of thousands of people has that one vessel left an impression on over many decades? I still remember going on that boat over 30 years ago myself as a child. If you have not had the chance I recommend you experience it. You will come to understand that some things, especially enjoying our coastal waters, are timeless enjoying something many have over 60 years ago!

It is more of a somber Throwback Thursday remembering it was 19 years today since Hurricane Katrina forever left it's mark on our community. Our landscape and residents were forever changed, and almost 20 years later it becomes harder to remember what it was like before the storm.

Captain Ben was 21 years old when Katrina hit. Below are some memories of a place that was near and dear to him that the MS Gulf Coast lost in that storm, Marine Life Oceanarium. Not only did he visit many times over his life, but prior to Katrina he also worked as a scuba diver doing dive shows and maintenance there as well. Many pictures date back to the late 80's and early 90's. With the latest one being post Katrina at Atlantis in the Bahamas with Kaden, Captain Ben's son, being face to face with one of the dolphins that used to reside at Marine Life. For those who don't know, the dolphins from the oceanarium were found after the storm and relocated to Atlantis. Seeing the dolphins he used to be around daily in Atlantis with his son was a full circle healing moment for your Captain after living through and seeing the devastation from that hurricane.

My thoughts are with those whose lives were forever changed and lost that day, and I hope that those who survived found some form of healing themselves. I also hope everyone was able to concentrate on some of the fond memories prior to this date 19 years ago, as I have today. Afterall, that is really what Throwback Thursday is all about.

For Throwback Thursday this week we have a cool piece of Biloxi history I stumbled across recently. This was well before High Times Charters was thought of here in Biloxi, but they offered a similar expierience to what many in our fleet offer today. I wonder how many of our old Biloxi folks remember this operation and vessels?
