September is a time of change in North Dakota as days get shorter and refreshingly cooler. Leaves begin their annual color change, and this year outdoor recreation continues to be the perfect activity for friends and family to go out and experience while social distancing.

Did you know that getting outdoors is good for your mental health? Studies show that being outside has several positive impacts on our health, like the sun’s effect on pain mitigation, enhanced creativity, daily doses of vitamin D and increased immune systems (www.mentalfloss.com/article/70548/11-scientific-benefits-being-outdoors).

It does a body good to take trips into and recreate in the great outdoors, and planning can be just as important as the trip itself. Doing your homework before leaving home builds excitement and eases concerns about safe travel. As part of the U.S. Travel Association's “Let's Go There” Coalition, North Dakota is welcoming visitors to travel confidently and responsibly through the state and nation (https://www.ndtourism.com/north-dakota-welcomes-you).

It’s one thing to see the leaves change colors in the fall. It’s something totally different to play around underneath the colorful canopy like you can in the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area (www.parkrec.nd.gov/pembina-gorge-state-recreation-area). The pristine 2,800-acre site along the North Dakota-Canada border has 30 miles of motorized and non-motorized trails, much of it within the wooded hillsides.

Turtle River State Park welcomes Megan Hanson, an artist who creates realistic, expressive landscapes and portraits utilizing acrylic paint and ink, for a week-long residency, July 12-19. Hanson often draws inspiration from photos of her life as a reference for her work and transforms them with wide color palettes to give due attention to the forgotten and simple aspects of human life.

The program's goal is to continue creating works of art that showcase, document and celebrate our North Dakota State Parks while providing opportunities for visitors to become stewards.

On Saturday, July 18, at 2:00 pm, there will be a demonstration and lecture taking place at Turtle River State Park's amphitheater that will include botanical painting as Hanson discusses the history of plants and the role they play in our ecosystem. This opportunity will be entertaining, educational, and interactive. From 2:30 pm-4:00 pm, stations will be set up at the park's amphitheater, each dedicated to a different plant.

Materials utilized, such as pencils and paintbrushes, will be given and assigned to participants, not shared, reducing contact. Hand sanitizer will be made available to all participants.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend all of the activities put on by the artist. All ages and skills are welcome. The event is free of charge in accordance with a state park's daily or annual pass, which can be obtained onsite or via www.parkrec.nd.gov.

For additional details and park information, please visit the event listing on Turtle River State Park's page or call 701-795-3180.

Lake Metigoshe State Park to Host Day Camps for Youth
The Outdoor Learning Center (OLC) at Lake Metigoshe State Park is hosting a series of age-specific day camps this summer for youth that will focus on hands-on recreational skills and environmental education. A camp opportunity for 8- to 11-year-olds is scheduled for August 10 and 11 and will feature hands-on activities related to archery, wildlife, and freshwater ecology. Lake Metigoshe State Park is partnering with the North Dakota Game & Fish Department to provide a camp opportunity for 12- to 14-year-olds on August 13 and 14 that will feature an introduction to archery, intermediate archery, a 3D archery shoot, introduction to kayaking, and various survival skills. Each day camp will also feature some time at the end of the day to explore and enjoy the beach at Lake Metigoshe State Park. The goals for these camps are to get youth outdoors to explore a natural environment and to learn recreational skills in a safe, hands-on environment.
Registration is $40 per day and will include lunch and the use of all recreational equipment involved. Camps start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Participants should bring their own sunscreen, refillable water bottle, and bug spray to maximize their comfort level. Each participant is responsible for bringing their own swimming attire and a towel. Participants are welcomed and encouraged to bring their own life jackets for kayaking activities.

Cowboy Up in North Dakota this July
Take the best holiday, the best cowboys and cowgirls in the country, the best rodeo stock in the world and bring them together in one of the best rodeo states in the country and you get a Fourth of July firework show in the dirt.

The Mandan Rodeo Days Rodeo (http://mandanrodeo.com) will celebrate its 141st year July 2-4 with a star-studded lineup that includes many of the top Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) performers in the world. For three nights, the pros and regional favorites will ride, wrestle and rope, hoping to get that “big present” during “Cowboy Christmas.” Even if the four-legged athletes hope to keep them from doing so.

Nine-time PBR stock contractor of the year, Chad Berger of Mandan will bring his bulls and Joe Simon of Dakota Rodeo will provide other roughstock, much of which is famous in the National Finals Rodeo circles.

Next up might be from the legendary Killdeer Mountain Roundup Rodeo (https://killdeermountainrounduprodeo.com) in Killdeer, which will celebrate its 97th year July 3-4, or the 61st Towner Rodeo (www.ndrodeo.com/rodeo-programs/55th-annual-towner-rodeo).

North Dakota has several exceptional areas to see from the saddle. Enjoy a short ride at the Medora Riding Stables or as part of a ranch vacation at Black Leg Ranch. Or explore the legendary landscapes with your own horse (www.ndtourism.com/articles/saddle-horseback-riding-north-dakota-style).

These are just a few ways to discover your cowboy spirit in North Dakota. For more activities and events taking place go to www.ndtourism.com.
