After World War II, four of these six brothers, all military veterans, came back to Bloomfield to establish what was known as the finest medical clinic in Southeast Iowa. " The first of the Gilfillan family to practice medicine in America was Dr Alexander Gilfillan, born 1776 and a surgeon in the War of 1812. A medical Gilfillan has served in every U S War since. Five of the six doctor sons of Dr Homer J Gilfillan in this generation saw duty in World War II. Mustered out after the war, four of the sons established their clinic, thereby realizing a dream they had often talked about with their father. Combining their own special branches of training, they added three other doctors: Dr s R Jaskunas, obstetrics and gynecology, Dr Richard Schoonover, urological specialist and Dr W A Haufe, internal medicine."
