Pedal Faster, I hear banjo music...

08/09/2012

For those we haven't been able to reach, there will be no ROCK the Blue Ridge organized ride in 2012, and we apologize to everyone for this. The riding is still great in the NC High Country and we encourage you to still make a trip or two to enjoy the incredible mountain roads of Avery, Burke, and Watauga Counties, not to mention temperatures in the mid 70's. You'll be hard pressed to find a better place to ride in the Southeast in August!

(AP) -- People thought Jim Ochowicz was crazy, or at least overly ambitious, when he first told them about his master plan. He wanted to build a world-class cycling team comprised of Americans who would challenge their European counterparts on their own soil for the first time.

And another state embraces the power of cycling for tourism, job growth, AND cutting health care cost. Go Iowa! Lets Go North Carolina! Thank You, Spencer Oswald, for sharing what your great home state is doing. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012302130011

Wax poetic about fresh air, good times and great health from a bicycle ride, but cycling advocates know what public decision-makers say. Show me the money. Now they can.

A lot of buzz this AM on http://www.blueridgeoutdoors.com/outdoor-blogs/editors-blog/blue-ridge-parkway-closed-to-cyclists/ Apparently there are two issues for cyclists and the Parkway that this blog post combines: 1. the General Management Plan for the BRP which has open comment till Dec 16th - and cyclists by all means should use their voice here, though at no point have these discussions to my knowledge mentioned not allowing cycling on the Parkway; and 2. A legislative bill that has been introduced in Washington that would forbid cycling in all National Parks. We have more lead time to address the 2nd issue, but the stakes are MUCH higher. More info to follow...

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the single most popular road for bicyclists in the Blue Ridge. Cyclists cherish the Parkway’s 469 scenic miles from Shenandoah to the Smokies. Even Lance Armstrong pedaled the high-elevation road during his Tour de France
